Movie Reviews of Welcome to the Dollhouse

Movie Review: Drop Dead Lesbo..
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie takes a painstakingly real look at the life of the geeky, introverted Dawn Weiner (Heather Matarazzo), that hits a little too close to home for some of us. Dawn, "Weinerdog" is in Junior High and has no friends. Everyone picks on her and treats her like most kids do in school. Dawn is in love with her older nerdy brothers "friend" Steve Rodgers who is in High School. She hates her little sister Missy, who is doted upon by her mother and pretty much a spoiled brat who's the only child that gets her parents love. Dawn has only one friend Ralphie who is younger than she is. Dawn so desperateley wants to be cool she even has a shoddy little clubhouse named "The Special People Club" in her backyard. Though Dawn is quiet and reserved, it's blatantly obvious that she's screaming for attention and acceptance in every way throughout the film, but everyone seems so cold, and ununderstanding. Whether it's dealing with the school bullies or her seemingly uncaring parents at home, we follow Dawn through her struggles of growing up as a Junior High loser. Does our anti-hero win in the movie? What do you think? It's a movie imitating life, sad as it may be, it's true.

Movie Review: "All in All, As Angsty As you can get"
Summary: 5 Stars

Welcome to The Dollhouse has to be my favorite movie of all time. Basically becasue it has that charm that makes anyone feel good about themselves. After what "Dawn" the main charecter (Matrazzo) has to go through, (with the whole school hating her, and her family life in shambles) you gotta feel better about your self when in comparison to her. You can see through the movie, that Matrazzo is really beautiful lady. This just means that Matrazzo gives a blockbuster preformance, because her charecter, Dawn, is a really ugly girl. The direction is decent, but what really puts the movie over the top is Matrazzo, and Brendon Sexton the Third. He plays another sad teen going through hard times, your average D minus poverty stricken pot head, who is really believable as his charecter. And the chemistry of the two together is magnicficent! The ending of the movie is a real mystery and i'm not gonna give it away, although you'll probably be disappointed, but i will say it makes you think about Dawn's life. It's a little shock for the oblivious overprotective parent, but just right for a teen who is in Dawn's position, or has been there before.

Movie Review: A movie that shows what middle school is REALLY like!
Summary: 5 Stars

If you were mr or miss Popular or Jock in school I would suggest you stop reading right now!! This movie realisticly shows the reality of Middle school. A three year period that is even worse than most prisons. A period that most people (Like myself) would prefer to block out! This movie is about Dawn Weiner the absoulute low end of the social chain at Ben Franklin Jr. High located somewhere in suburban New Jersey.Anybody who went to middle school (Public or even Private) would know. The strangely ugly dog with thick glasses, bland hair, bad taste in clothing, a bit on the big side that even people that were allready pretty low in popularity themselves would bully around or yell out "DOG" or "Lezbo" whenever she walked by. This movie realistic captures the horrors of suburban middle school hell or any middle school for that matter. Plus the girl is actually homely (No offence to Heather :) unlike the Hollywood teen movies in which the ugly girl is really a babe with glasses and a pony tail. Final verdict.. This movie is wonderful and makes you thankfull that the misery know as middle school ended and that you grew up unharmed(Well "mostly" unharmed!:)

Movie Review: In a Barbie World
Summary: 5 Stars

"Welcome to the Dollhouse" was Todd Solondz's amazing breakthrough movie. It's at turns hilarious, poignant, dark, and heartbreaking. Anyone who has been bullied can understand the daily trials of Dawn Wiener (Heather Matarazzo) called "Wiener Dog." Her parents don't appreciate her. They prefer her sappy,ballet-dancing younger sister. She has a crush on a rocker (Eric Mabius of "Ugly Betty",in an early&prescient role,Betty&Dawn are virtually twins) The beautiful people don't like Dawn. Dawn's name is ironic. She feels like she's in the Twilight Zone. Her condition is universal--the desire to love and be loved. When she gets revenge on the bullies, you cheer for her. "Welcome to the Dollhouse" is from back in the day when art house movies weren't bleak. They were usually awash with color (see "Desperate Remedies" and "But I'm a Cheerleader") There's another layer of irony in this bittersweet cake. In "Welcome",Dawn is accused of being a lesbian. Last year, when gay marriage was briefly legal, Matarazzo married her longtime girlfriend. Matarazzo has moved onto smaller roles, even in the awful "Hostel" series. "Welcome" stands as a '90s cult classic.

Movie Review: Realistic film about the horrors of high school
Summary: 5 Stars

"Why do you hate me?" asks Dawn, a junior high outcast. "Because you're... ugly," replies her classmate, in one of the most heart-wrenching scenes in "Welcome to the Dollhouse". Heather Matarazzo plays Dawn Wiener, a junior high school student with no friends and parents who favour her younger sister Missy. Dawn is constantly harassed, especially by Brandon, a boy involved in drugs. After enduring what she does at school, Dawn comes home to her family - a family that could really care less about her. During the course of the film, I couldn't stop feeling sorry for Dawn because, like most people who can relate to this movie, I was sort of like Dawn when I was in school. Heather Matarazzo perfectly portrays Dawn in a way that most other actresses probably couldn't. She brings realism and honesty to the role and keeps the movie afloat during the last twenty minutes when it gets a bit silly. All in all, "Welcome to the Dollhouse" has been able to convey the realities of high school, unlike some recent movies and television shows. This is a MUST for anyone who didn't have the greatest time in school.
