Movie Reviews of Weird Al Yankovic - LiveMovie Review: Good tap-your-feet-fun for the whole family Summary: 5 Stars
I liked it. That's because I'm a Weird Al fan. If you are not a Weird Al fan, you might not like this DVD because you will find it too silly
Movie Review: Very Funny Summary: 5 Stars
This dvd and the video collection are my kids two favorite music dvd's. Both of them are worth having.
Movie Review: "Almost" Perfect, Except...... Summary: 4 Stars
First let me say that I LOVE Weird Al and his music. I've been a fan since the beginning. The concert on DVD was great, and the selection of songs was fantastic. I won't bore you by mentioning song titles, etc. which has already been done numerous times here. I have to mention a couple of things, however: Even though no one else has mentioned it here, it was obvious to me that many (or most?) of Al's vocals were lip-synched. The music, as well as the other band members' vocals are apparently live, but Al's vocals were noticeably "perfect" even when he moved slightly away from the mic. This was most obvious to me during "Like a Surgeon." Just watch when he rolls over, etc. They were not his studio vocals, but instead appear to have been recorded "live" for use in this show. The other (minor) problem is that there is a DVD defect (in 2 different copies that I tried, and no doubt in the whole production run), where the picture freezes for about a second at the end of "Smells Like Teen Spirit," one of my favorite tracks. It probably won't be serious enough for them to re-issue the disc, but it will bother the more particular of DVD collectors. Still, the concert was great, the band fantastic, and the picture quality and 5.1 audio (otherwise) excellent. I'm just surprised and a bit disappointed that no other reviewers here mentioned the 2 issues that I pointed out. I hope this helped to illuminate things for the more discriminating fans.
Movie Review: Weird Al Yankovic Live--It's Really Your Only Choice Summary: 4 Stars
This is a fun DVD, mainly for the Weird Al fan, from around 2000, the Running with Scissors tour. It is a hometown concert, with a very sweet introduction by his parents(these are the sort of things that I think make Al not just a good performer, but a great guy). The first five songs are just him performing in front of a microphone. I love Al, but an artist as strongly visual as Al needs to maintain that through the whole concert. Not to fear, they are still good songs, and well done. However the fun really starts with "Dare to Be Stupid" and sustains all the way through "Yoda".
Additionally there are two videos ('The Saga Begins' and 'It's All About the Pentiums') and two...er...educational films ('Crimes of Carelessness' and 'Germs and You')that are very funny.
Newcomers would be better served by one of his CDs(preferably "Off the Deep End" or earlier) or his Ultimate Video Collection. Fans, though will enjoy this, and is a solid investment that accents all of Weird Al's great diversity in performing and entertaining. But what's with that audience? Get off your butts and on your feet folks.
Movie Review: very good but not great Summary: 4 Stars
I've seen Al live several times. I liked some of the older tours better than "touring with scissors" which this is shot from. Any Al show is an absolute blast. However there are a few items from the live shows that were missing from this recording. Camera work is very good. Sound quality is very good. The mix with the crowd noise mic open sounds a little strange. I had hoped for more surround effects. Bonus features are nice. This is a must have for any Al fan or anybody looking for a very entertaining concert. It's a very good video, but doesn't hold up to the real thing.
