Movie Reviews of Weird Al Yankovic - Live

Movie Review: Al live is a must see!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Weird Al Yankovic live, comes off just as fun as one of his movies or songs would. This DVD is a live recording of one of his concerts that he had after the release of his Running with Scissors album.

The best part is that the concert isn't just of the songs that were on that latest album, but full of many of his old favorites that many Weird Al fans have been hooked on for years. Dare to Be Stupid, Amish Paradise, Like a Surgeon as well as newer hits like The Saga Begins and All about the Pentiums.

A few of the songs are interesting to note .. like Yoda for instance which is a song about Luke Skywalkers experiences with Yoda, is sung like you would usualy hear it but it suddenly will go into a weird chant that he has done at various times during his concerts. Just out of nowhere he starts to go into it and it's pretty impressive if not wacky to watch the whole band suddenly go into a trance like that. And also a good thing to note is the song the Night Santa Went Crazy has an alternate line that you won't hear in the song recorded on tape (won't give it away but any true Al fan should know already). I also enjoyed his compilation song which was a mixture of a lot of his old songs all in one huge melody. Some of the song would be sung and Al would whip on a new costume to fit the song he is about to sing and go right into it without pausing.

I really can't say enough how great this concert really is. There is even subtitles you can turn on if you want to sing along with it and its just a thril to see all the people having a great time and all the effort and thought that Al seems to put into putting on the show. I'm surprised they took this long to put his concert onto tape or DVD. It really is one of the best and most fun I have ever watched.

Bonus materials include the two music videos from Running with Scissors which are great in itself. And some funny 50'esque black and white shorts that he did for his AlTV specials some time back.

Bottom line, if you think you have heard and seen Al , you aint seen nothing yet until you have seen him live! You are definitely missing out if you don't have this already. You won't be sorry getting this. Its a great laugh and a lot of fun all the way through.

Movie Review: He IS perfect!!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the single greatest piece of multimedia anyone could ever own! The parodies are simply magnificent, as is Al's performance. Having done some (semi)-professional singing of my own, it's nice to see an artist who actually seems to be enjoying his music and time spent with his enraptured fans, as opposed to one with a pained and/or indifferent expression that conveys he can't wait to get off the stage and back to spending his wads of cash! I have only seen the DVD once at a friend's house (I myself own the VHS and have only watched it about a thousand times) and didn't notice the stoppage at the end of "Teen Spirit", not to say that it isn't there; I simply failed to make note of it. I must comment on the accusation of a lip-synched performance in a previous review, however. Al prides himself on NEVER lip-synching to his own songs. You can tell on some parts of the concert where his voice catches slightly and such, little things that prove it's all real. As for the perfect singing while writhing around, I'll have you know that I was at a Weird Al concert where he wracked himself up on a gate (outdoor theatre) trying to get into the audience for "One More Minute" and he only missed a beat (enough to tell that it was live, but also to prove he has great voice control even while in compromising positions and makes a quick recovery)! Well, I've wasted enough of you're time already; why are you still reading this review instead of filling out the order form? You HAVE to get this DVD (yeah, I'm talking to YOU, buddy). Keep the spirit of Al alive, and don't besmirch his good name with false accusations of (*shudders*) lip-synching. The council rests, Your Honor...

Movie Review: Greatest live performer on earth
Summary: 5 Stars

"Weird Al" Yankovic live is an excellent DVD. For those of us living outside North America who never get to see a live show from the greatest music artist in the world this is a must. The Saga Begins and All About the Pentiums music videos are also great with the commentary by Al extremely educational. Speaking of educational Germs and You and Crimes of Carelessness are again brilliant and those of us living overseas never get to see them any other way.

The Live concert part of the DVD is extremely entertaining you even get to see Al's parents. He dresses up in the fat suit, as Kirk Cobain and many other costumes throughout the show.

My only critisisms of the DVD are that I would have rather seen other live songs instead of The Saga begins and All about the Pentiums since their film clips are on the DVD already but I think this was all shot at one concert. Maybe they could have shown bits from a few different concerts as well than just one.
It's great to here different updated versions of classic songs like Dare to Be Stupid and experience the Yoda chant.

"Weird Al" is the greatest and it's a shame he hasn't done a live show in Australia. Thankfully he finally is and us fans here in Asutralia will get to see him in October. This DVD is a definate buy for those who cannot attend a concert as well as those who just love "Weird Al". Note you can buy versions of this for Australian/New Zealand DVD's I have one (although Amazon for some reason doesn't seem to have any). It's a shame UHF and The Videos stick to the North American format but I just bought a multizone DVD player so I could watch them because the complete Al experience is too good to miss out on. Buy this DVD!

Movie Review: A must have for all Weird Al fans!
Summary: 5 Stars

I love this show! The music is great. The performance is fun, energetic, and very entertaining. And Al is introduced by his parents (who actually seem proud of him). This concert has almost all of Al's greatest hits: The live version of Fat with the blowup costume is very cool. Dare to be Stupid is amazing. And Amish Paradise is the best I've seen it done. I really love this version of The Night Santa Went Crazy. It is much better than the original.

In addition to the concert there are two "bonus" music videos, All About the Pentiums which is okay and The Saga Begins which is much better. Wish that Jurassic Park had been included as I like that one much better but it is on his music video album and thus available. There are a couple of Al TV shorts too. The only real shortcoming of this live concert is in the medley section where he plays snippets of some of my favorite songs such as Pretty Fly for A Rabbi, I Love Rocky Road, and Jurassic Park. I would much rather have seen the entirety of each song. The other odd thing is that the audience isn't as into the concert as I would have thought. Perhaps they just chose odd times for the crowd cutaways. Most of the action is on the performers anyway so it's not all that distracting.

Movie Review: And I was there too!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is an excellent example of "Weird Al's" live shows - I should know, I went to 7 of them on his last tour. Ruben, one of the guys in the band, said he thought the lighting was bad, but I think it is just fine. Except for Al's hair being in his face a bit too much, it is fantastic. This DVD shows all of Al's favorite hits, but only gives you a hint of the hilarity that happens during costume changes. If you look really close you can see me in the audience right before the last number "Yoda". I'm the one standing up and clapping ...

If there is one thing lacking in this DVD, it is the extended medly that includes "Laundry Day", a personal favorite of mine.

If you like "Weird Al" even just a teeny tiny bit, this is pure viewing pleasure. And, not enough good things can be said about the band. Playing musical instruments takes a tremendous talent. Add to this, the costume changes, the different styles of music that they play, and switching styles for each new song, and I hope that the masses will appreciate them as much as I do. They ROCK.

Any and all "Al Pals" feel free to e-mail me any time. After all, if you've made it this far, we are all part of the elite "Close Personal Friend" corp. I have the tattoo to prove it! ...
