Movie Reviews of War Dance

Movie Review: War/Dance Reivew
Summary: 5 Stars

War/Dance brings to life the awe-inspiring story of the children living in the Patongo refugee camp in war-torn Uganda and their struggle to make it to the renowned Kampala Music Festival. The children in this film have been wrenched from their homes and families and been forced to join rebel forces and both commit and witness unfathomable atrocities. Yet in spite of the grave circumstances these children confront in this war-fraught region of Northern Uganda, they are determined to use their musical talent to make it to the festival and represent their region and themselves despite their reputation. War/Dance is a film that, unlike so many contemporary documentaries, is by no means pedantic or staid, but addresses a grave and pressing matter from behind a hopeful and jubilant lens. The contrast between these children's war-torn lives and the inspiration they find within their music creates a rousing tale that emphasizes hope from amidst tragedy.

Movie Review: Beautiful
Summary: 5 Stars

Music has been the one constant in African existence on the motherland and in the diaspora. It is the vibration that sustains and uplifts us in the face of adversity. This film is but one example of how music gives us hope no matter what the circumstances is.

Films like these should be release to wider audiences because unless you're familiar with film festivals and such, these great films never reach the masses. I loved and identified with the characters in the movie in the sense that their love of music and the contest provided an positive outlet for them in the worse conditions. A good film for African children in America to watch and be inspired by. A good companion to this film is a film made a few years ago called Rize about a dance contest among African-America children in Cali. The experiences between the kids in Rize & War/dance are relative. 10 stars.

Movie Review: The perfect balance of sadness and cheer.
Summary: 5 Stars

Finally, a well made documentary that isn't about Iraq or Afghanistan or America's involvement in something shameful. I wholeheartedly recommend this film both as a piece of entertainment and as a learning experience. The more we know about other cultures the better we can relate and understand. This could and should be shown in high schools as a way of teaching developing minds about the beauty and horror of growing up in a turbulent area of the world.

By the way, the picture and sound on this DVD are phenomenal. The production value is top notch, which certainly adds to the enjoyment of the experience. I just wish there was an interview or featurette with the filmmakers regarding their interest in the subject and how they came to know about these people and be there to film it all.

Movie Review: War Dance
Summary: 5 Stars

This was by far, hands down the best documentary film I've seen. The content needs to be brought to the awareness of all people in possesion of a TV/DVD player. The cinematography and editing was beautiful and amazing. It looked and felt like I was across the other side of the world there with these beautiful children. The stories of the children presented from their perspective in their own words will move you to tears and simply must be seen to understand and feel what they have suffered through and experienced. What I loved most about this film besides the stories, the people, the music and dance, is the message of hope and healing that is possible for these children with a little help from people who care enough to do something.

Movie Review: ABSOLUTELY AMAZING.
Summary: 5 Stars

What can I say? This movie was incredible. I was so attached to the three children is centered around--you really get to know and love them. The film work is awesome as well. The story does a good job of both showing how the conflict has deeply affected them, but also of how they continue to live. The narrative style is awesome as well, because unlike most documentaries in which you watch once, are informed, and never have the desire to pick them up again, War Dance is a story you can watch over and over. This is an absolute MUST see, particularly if you are interested in learning more about the war in Northern Uganda, but even still if you don't know a thing about it. The stories of the children are incredible.
