Movie Reviews of Wanted (Two-Disc Special Edition)Movie Review: You Will "WANT" to See This! Summary: 5 Stars
This review is for; Wanted (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Clearly this is the type of movie you can only enjoy if you don't take the specific details too seriously. Just enjoy the action packed ride of stunts and special effects! The action is way over the top, but is very stylishly done. There are a lot of slow motion effects (and speeded up effects too!), scenes that go in reverse, bullet skin-piercing close-ups and car stunts that clearly look impossible, but are nevertheless still fun to watch! Great DVD to own and I think it could be enjoyed with repeated viewings!
Rather than go over the plot and film details as many other reviewers have, I just "wanted" point out the features for the two-disc DVD set. If you live near Target their two-disc DVD set or Blue-Ray set contains a Target exclusive 22-page booklet with production notes and photos. Very nice to have!
The bonus disc of "Wanted" has nearly 90 minutes of special features. A digital copy of the movie is included that you can download to your PC, I-pod or other video player. There is one extended scene (not deleted) when Wesley Gibson is shooting at the three dead corpses that is actually kind of humorous to watch, but only adds about two minutes to the film. The other featurettes are called; "Cast & Characters", "Stunts on the L Train", "Special Effects: The Art of the Impossible", "Groundbreaking Visual Effects: From Imagination to Execution", "Origins of Wanted: Bringing the Graphic Novel to Life", "Through the Eyes of Director Timur Bekmamvetov", "Making of Wanted the Video Game", eight scenes from the comic book with narration (very interesting!) and a music video for the Danny Elfman song "The Little Things".
Unfortunately there is no commentary for the feature film, but the numerous featurettes range from approximately 2 minutes (L Train Stunts) to 10 or 20 minutes for the remaining featurettes, so there is a lot of extra content to see. Most of the featurettes are your standard cast, crew interviews with your standard behind the scenes footage and film footage. Most of the stunts are done with the actual actors/actresses fitted with harnesses and green-screen backgrounds. Very interesting to see the car flipping and the train under the bridge stunts!
I found the comic book narration very interesting to watch and to see how different or similar the movie compared to the comic book adaptation. For example, the female assassin "Fox" (played by Angelina Jolie) was originally conceived as an African-American female. If you are into the video game of "Wanted", some special codes pop up on the screen after you watch two of the featurettes on the bonus disc. I think the codes give your video game character better life or killing modes, but I'm not exactly sure since I don't have a copy of the game myself. Overall, this is a good two-disc set to have. I still wish there could have been a commentary track, but the numerous special features on the second disc kind of make up for it. Recommended and very fun to watch!
Summary of Wanted (Two-Disc Special Edition)WANTED (SPECIAL EDITION) - DVD Movie As the impresario behind gravity-defying Russian blockbuster Night Watch, it's inevitable that Hollywood would come calling for Timur Bekmambetov. With a studio budget and an international cast, including two Oscar winners, Timur cooks up a Hong Kong-styled actioner bursting with fast cars and big guns. Our unlikely hero is mild-mannered Chicago accountant Wesley Gibson (Atonement's James McAvoy), whose father died when he was a tot. Wesley never learned to stand up for himself, and his girlfriend, boss, and best buddy all take advantage until the seductive Fox (Angelina Jolie) rescues him from a sharpshooter named Cross (The Pianist?s Thomas Kretschmann). After which, she whisks him away to a mansion on the edge of town to meet the other members of the Fraternity, where leader Sloan (Morgan Freeman) informs Wesley that Cross, a rogue agent, executed his father. Sloan believes Wesley has the goods to take him out, so he undergoes the Fraternity's brutal training regimen (Marc Warren and Common dish up some of the abuse). When he's ready, Sloan sends him out to fulfill his duty, but matters become complicated when Wesley finds out someone isn't telling the truth, leading our former milquetoast to exact an elaborate revenge. For those who've been following McAvoy's career to date, Wanted will surely come as a surprise. In adapting Mark Millar's comic series, Timur offers buckets of blood and a smidgen of depth, but fans of The Matrix and Mr. and Mrs. Smith will want to give this one a look. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
