Movie Reviews of Walnut CreekMovie Review: I attended this concert Summary: 5 Stars
I do not have this DVD yet but I am buying it now. I just saw this item reviewed in Modern Drummer magazine from February 2009.
I was at this concert; it was the last summer I spent in North Carolina, where I grew up. We were on the grassy hill, which is most of the audience area, behind the covered seating area. When the intermission came the storm began, or the beginning of the storm may have heralded the intermission. The storm was an absolutely torrential downpour. There was nothing to do but stand in the rain and get soaked. It was a glorious, liberating experience, and I was not on drugs. I had one beer before the show. No one left the amphitheater. Everyone just stood in the rain and yelled and danced and celebrated the glory of earth and god and mother nature. "There was nothing else to do but stand in the rain and get wet" has long been my quote when telling the story of this concert to people. We did primal scream therapy in the downpour as well, lol.
We wondered if there would be a second set because the storm was so intense and powerful. The intermission was extremely long because the band was waiting to see if they would be able to take the stage again without risking electrocution. After the rain stopped Phish came out for the second set. Everyone danced like maniacs; you could see steam rising off of people's bodies as the rainwater evaporated. Phish seemed to be playing out of their minds. The audience and the musicians on stage and the storm had all become one being, one consciousness. I think Phish was flabbergasted and honored that not one member of the audience had left; everyone stood in a thunderstorm for an hour waiting to hear more of their music. By the time the concert was over we had danced ourselves dry. The heat of our bodies and and the heat of all the other bodies around us dancing madly had dried the wetness from our saturated clothes.
I will never forget this concert; as I said, it was one of the most profound experiences of my life, and one of the most transcendent musical experiences I have ever had, and I think music is the greatest thing outside of love and family that life has to offer.
I am deeply touched that Phish decided 11 years later to release a complete and uncut DVD of this performance. I had no idea they felt the same way about this show as I and my friends did.
