Movie Reviews of Waiting for Guffman

Movie Review: ONE OF THE FUNNIEST MOVIES I HAVE EVER SEEN!
Summary: 5 Stars

"Waiting For Guffman" is one of the funniest and quirkiest movies ever filmed. If you are a fan of "Spinal Tap," then you will LOVE "Waiting For Guffman." Filmed in the same "mock-umentary" style as Spinal Tap, this film chronicles the horror that can be local theater. Corky (brilliantly played by Christopher Guest) and his Cast (consisiting of Fred WIllard, Parker Posey, Catherine O'Hara) are reaching for the stars when they put on a play about their (fictional) town: Blaine, Missouri. The musical is so terrible, that only a resident of this town could like it, yet they all truly believe that they will all go to Broadway. Their energy and optimism provodes much of the humor. If you want to laugh, see Waiting for Guffman!

Movie Review: Midnight at the Oasis
Summary: 5 Stars

Waiting for Guffman is quite possibly the funniest movie ever made. Christopher Guest and Eugene Levy are a comedic force of unparalleled genius. The first time one watches this film, the depth of each character and over-all brilliance cannot possible be appreciated. Only after repeated viewings can one come to realize just how clever this film really is. Corky St. Clair is as unforgettable a character as any in the history of film.

I find it hard to compare this film to This is Spinal Tap because they have different directors and a much different feel. But it is certain that both stem from the same creative root. Nothing I can say about Waiting for Guffman can possibly do it justice. Just watch it. Then, watch it again and again and again and again and...

Movie Review: It's Best in Show without the dogs - and just as funny
Summary: 5 Stars

Once again, a hilarious movie from Christopher Guest. This is genuinely funny, and I was surprised by this - I was expecting something a little more disappointing.

The only gripe with it is that it feels very similar to Best in Show (unsurprisingly), especially since almost all the actors were also in Best in Show. That's hardly a slight against the movie, it just feels a little odd if you've also seen Best in Show -- you have to force your mind to stop thinking of people as "guy with the basset hound."

The DVD also has the bonus of extra footage - highly worth it since the film, while paced excellently, ends long before you want it to. A little on the short side, but truly funny the entire time, this film comes highly recommended.

Movie Review: The Best of Christopher Guest
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the best of Christopher Guest's "mocumentaries." There are a few shots that don't fit the documentary style, but the movie is so incredibly funny you probably will not notice. After watching this movie with my daughter, we couldn't help but quote lines from the movie for weeks. The depiction of community theater is dead-on accurate ... the spacey, unfocused gaze of the actors in the performance-within-the-performance cannot be coached ... each of these cast members must have experienced community theater personally.

If you are as demented as my daughter and I, you will rewind time and again to play one line that the character "Corky" utters: "Everybody dance!" You'll know what I mean when you hear it.

Movie Review: Worth the Wait..
Summary: 5 Stars

When I first discovered the magic of DVD...this was the one I salivated for. And it was worth the wait. The deleted scenes alone will make it worth the price. One interesting note to the deleted scenes is how drastically it would've changed the overall tone and feel of the film. But it is a true gem that MUST be added to your DVD collection.

If you haven't seen Guffman, run, don't walk, to see it. It's portrayal of small town culture AND community theater culture are painfully percise, yet celebrate these very mini-societies. Hilarious, touching, and terrific social commentary (is there anything more telling about the pathos of life than Libby and the barbeque'd chicken wing?) 'Guffman' is a fine piece of filmmaking.
