Movie Reviews of Waiting for Guffman

Movie Review: Pee your pants funny
Summary: 5 Stars

For anyone who's ever been in a high school play or befriended an actor, Christopher Guest's "Waiting for Guffman" will hit hilariously close to home. The film, which revolves around a historical play being put on in a small Missouri town, is not so much a parody of small town life as it is a parody of drama queens everywhere. Corky St. Claire (Guest) is the play's director and producer, who every wannabe actor in the area worships simply because he once lived in New York (it's never really clear what exactly he ever did there). The small town folks who Corky casts in his play are a series of hysterically funny characters brilliantly portrayed by the likes of Parker Posey, Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara and Fred Willard. Filmed in a "Mockumentary" style, "Waiting for Guffman" is one of the funniest films I've ever seen.

Movie Review: Very Very Funny
Summary: 5 Stars

If you liked Spinal Tap or Best in Show, you will like this.

If you didn't, you won't.

In my opinion, Waiting for Guffman surpasses Best in Show, though the latter was higher on the public radar. In any case, the recent release of A Mighty Wind is very encouraging, particularly in the continued use of much of the same cast. Each installment of the Christopher Guest Troupe is like a highly refined cinematic Carol Burnett Show.

My only complaint about this DVD is that it would have been relatively easy to provide an "uninterrupted version" of Red, White & Blaine. While you can get almost the entirety of the fake musical through the main movie & additional scenes, it requires some jumping around. I presume that this footage actually exists somewhere, and the fake musical is so successfully done that it could almost stand on its own.

Movie Review: Christopher Guest, A Comical Genius!!
Summary: 5 Stars

The thing about Christopher Guest is you either love his movies or you hate them. I really can't see how some people just absolutely find his movies unbearable. I personally think the man is a comical genius and I could not hold back laughter during this movie if my life depended on it. All in all, this a great comedy with great actors like Eugene Levy, Fred Willard, Parker Posey and Christopher Guest. If you like this movie check out his other mockumentaries: This is Spinal Tap, his first movie, its about a brittish rock band who is having a reunion tour, it's absolutely hilarious; then theres Best in Show, a movie about an annual dog show, it's my personal least favorite but it's still great. Also check out A Mighty Wind, Christopher Guests newest movie, it's about folk singers and is in theaters now!

Movie Review: One of the best movies ever
Summary: 5 Stars

My wife and I discovered Waiting for Guffman in the theater when it first came out. We loved it immediately and turned many people on to it. We watched our VHS tape at least 100 times over the past 4 years. We were lucky enough to get the VHS box autographed by Fred Willard at the premiere for Best in Show. The DVD version was played the first day it came out. We thought we knew every line of dialogue and every song by heart and were looking forward to the deleted scenes with great anticipation. Although the majority of them are quite humorous, the final one "Bulging River" had us both laughing so hard we were crying. Why this scene was deleted from the original film is beyond me. We absolutely worship this film, the characters in it, and all the songs. You can't view a more enjoyable movie!

Movie Review: Dry Humor At Its Best
Summary: 5 Stars

One of the funniest movies ever made. The obscure title may cause some to pass it by, but what a mistake! Just a few ideas were given to guide the cast. The dialog is mostly (if not all) improv! The brilliant cast plays Mid-America to the hilt - and with deadly accuracy. Parker Posey as the white-trash dimwit with a father in prison is all too real - I think all Midwesterners knew someone like this growing up. Even more hilarious is Christopher Guest as a flaming gay man from New York (yet no one can figure it out - except the owner of the local auto shop who's son is getting hit on by Guest). And, Fred Willard as the over-bearing husband is everyone's next door neighbor. The cast goes on and on - one more bizarre than the next.

Highly entertaining - Highly recommended!
