Movie Reviews of Waiting for Guffman

Movie Review: The Midwest Has Never Been So Funny
Summary: 5 Stars

This is honestly one of the funniest movies this reviewer has ever seen. Christopher Guest (Best in Show, This is Spinal Tap) hones his "mocumentary" skills and proves he is king of the genre by giving the best performance of his career in a superbly written and directed film.

This all-star cast delivers an amazingly believable performance, transcending (or perhaps descending) real-life social status and fame to convince the viewer that each cast member is actually a citizen of rural America, caught up in the excitement of presenting a play for a New York City reviewer.

Several movies, including "Drop Dead Gorgeous" and "Miss Congeniality" have recently attempted "Waiting for Guffman's" cinematic feat, but all have been grossly outside Guest's bullseye. This movie is an hilarious look at stereotypical middle America, packed with the punch of Christopher Guest's sharp wit, and a believable documentary style.

Movie Review: Ouch, I know these people...
Summary: 5 Stars

The best thing about this movie is how true it rings. Anyone who has ever done local community theater will recognize all the players: the flaming, talent-challenged choreographer, the Hollywood know-it-alls who've never stepped foot outside the Midwest, the nervous nine to fiver who is stagestruck in his very first production ever.

Christopher Guest is an amazing actor, too. He's just a chameleon of characters. Watch him in this, Princess Bride, Best in Show, Spinal Tap, and A Few Good Men to see a dazzling array of the personas this man can create. Wow.

This film is largely improvised, which results in a very natural conversation style and realistic documentary flavor. The actors have an incredible flow with each other, mostly having worked together in other films. BTW, Christopher Guest and crew have a new mock-u-mentary coming out about bluegrass bands. Can't wait!

DVD has interesting unreleased scenes.

Movie Review: Gentle humor that provides belly laughs galore
Summary: 5 Stars

After wiping the tears from my eyes after watching "Best in Show," I discovered this little-known gem. Much like an earlier review stated, I too could watch this movie every single day and laugh until my vision blurred. I cannot remember a movie in the past twenty years with as many quality laughs and subtle jokes as "Waiting for Guffman." Sadly it suffers from a horrible title, but after one viewing even that is digestable. Every single character in this masterpiece is outstanding--there are NO weak characters and NO weak moments. It is important to listen carefully for all the jibes and one-liners delivered, especially by Fred Willard. His runs are priceless. I have to finish this review quickly because I want to rush into the living room and watch it again for the umpteenth time this month. Highest rating possible!!! Thanks go out to Christopher Guest and his troupe of comedic masters for a job well done!!!

Movie Review: bizarrely real.
Summary: 5 Stars

Partly why I thought this movie was so laugh-out-loud hysterical was because I felt like I personally knew every single character in it. If you have EVER been in an amateur or community theater production of any shape or form, this movie is guaranteed to make you laugh.

Of course, it's a funny movie anyway, even if you aren't familiar with the making of a local musical or rehearsal process. The documentary-style filming fits very well with the loose, comic acting and the characters are deliciously cast. Some of the funniest parts are the song-and-dance numbers in the show the citizens of Blaine, Missouri are putting on: "Red, White and Blaine".

I'm not even going to try to explain why they're putting the musical on, but let me just tempt your intrest by noting that you will, once and for all, find out if alien spacecraft did, actually, land at one time in the United States.

Movie Review: Get a Clue
Summary: 5 Stars

For those that "don't get" the humor in this movie, I have one word for you: SATIRE. Look it up in the dictionary, figure out what it means, if you can, then take another look at this movie. Chances are, the characters in this movie are frighteningly similar to yourselves. Both they, and you, "don't get it". If you find it boring because there is no "outright humor", or "comic situations", and if you feel that you were cheated when you showed it on your "big front projection theater" to a "diverse crowd", and they hated it, I'd be very willing to wager that the the person Mr. Guest is poking fun at here, is you and your "diverse crowd". And if you don't understand what I'm talking about, then just turn off your brain for good and go watch "American Pie" for the 151st time.
