Movie Reviews of WWE: WrestleMania XIXMovie Review: March 2003 - Safeco Field - Seattle, Washington Summary: 5 Stars
Wrestlemania 19 was probably the best PPV of 2003. All the matches were good, featuring 5 main event caliber matches. This
DVD is actually a 2 disc set.
1. Matt Hardy vs. Rey Mysterio (Cruiserweight Title)
Good way to kick off the show. I wasn't expecting a lot from this match, but it didn't deliver. Don't get me wrong, it was still good, but not what was expected. The match is very short. (7.5/10)
2. A-Train & Big Show vs. The Undertaker (Handicap Match)
Nathan Jones was supposed to be Undertaker's partner, but he was injured backstage by the F.B.I. This was actually a good match, led by Taker putting on a great performance. Good ending. (7.5/10)
3. Trish Stratus vs. Jazz vs. Victoria (Women's Title)
I am not a fan of women's wrestling, but this was actually a really good match. It may be the best women's match I have ever seen. Very well-done match. Kudos to the Divas. (8/10)
4. Los Guerrero's vs. Shelton Benjamin & Charlies Haas vs. Chris Benoit & Rhyno (WWE Tag Title/Triple Threat)
It is interesting to see how far Eddie Guerrero and Chris Benoit went from this PPV to Wrestlemania 20. I expected a lot from this match, but didn't get what I wanted. Probably the worst match of the night, but don't let that persuade you. It was still a good match. (7/10)
5. Shawn Michaels vs. Chris Jerico
Great match. Match of the night in my opinion. I love seeing good straight-up, no stipulation matches with no titles on the line. These two built up a good fued and went at it in a great match. There are many near falls and reversals. Second best match of the year in my opinion, only behind Angle/Benoit from Royal Rumble. (9.5/10)
6. Triple H vs. Booker T (World Heavyweight Championship)
Good effort by both men. I though this match would be a little better, but it was still very good. Triple H pulls out all the stops like usual. He even uses the Indian Death Lock. Nice to see Booker T use the Houston Hangove. Good match. (8.5/10)
7. Vince McMahon vs. Hulk Hogan (Street Fight)
Great beef going into this match. I knew this match was going to be good, but what we got was great. Amazing, bloody effort by both men. There is just so much emotion in this match. Good spot when Vince jumps off a ladder and leg-drops Hogan through an announce table. Surprise appearance by Roddy Piper and Shane McMahon. Look for the face Vince makes when he comes up from under the ring with the lead pipe. (9/10)
8. The Rock vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin
These two have such great chemistry together. This was another classic between the two. It is one of the top 5 matches of the year in my opinion. Great match, with a lot of near falls and a great finish. It is Austin's last match to date. (9.5/10)
9. Kurt Angle vs. Brock Lesnar (WWE Title)
This could have been an amazing match, but unfortunately Angle was hurt with a neck injury. It was still one of the top ten matches of the year in my opinion. Angle put his life on the line to wrestle in this match. This is a technical, suplex classic. The ending is amazing with Lesnar almost killing himself. Very scary to watch. (9.5/10)
The best extra feature on this DVD is RAW the next night when Goldberg makes his WWE debut. Very cool. Definately pick up this DVD. All the matches are good, especially the 5 main event caliber matches.
Overall Rating: 9.5/10
Movie Review: Best WWE PPV EVER! Summary: 5 Stars
Matches rated on the 5-star scale: DUD: Pure crap *: Ok, but didn't really go anywhere **: average match ***: solid, good match ****: awesome match, and a serious match of the year contender *****: absolutely fantastic, a candidate for greatest match ever. WWE Cruiserweight Championship Matt Hardy (c) w/ Shanon Moore vs. Rey Mysterio Booking gets a lot of heat for giving this match only 5 minutes, but looking back it was a smart choice. Matt and Rey are great, but don't have very good chemistry, so their matches are best kept short. The match is very fast paced and Rey throws out a lot of high spots. It's a lot of fun to watch, but there isn't a whole lot of substance. ** Undertaker vs. A-Train & Big Show Dropping Nathan from the match allowed this match to not suck and give it a "can Taker keep his streak intact?" feel, which is good. Match was nothing special, but not bad either. Good finish. *1/2 Womens Championship Victoria (c) vs. Jazz vs. Trish Stratus A really good womens match with a lot of action. **1/4 WWE Tag Team Championships Team Angle (c) vs. Rhyno & Chris Benoit vs. Los Guerreros Good match, but it should have gotten 5 more minutes and the finish was messed up. **1/2 Chris Jericho vs. Shawn Michaels Absolutely awesome match, definitely the match of the year. Jericho did a great job working on the back and generally acting like a jack ass, while Michaels did a good job of selling (aside from his comebacks, which is excusable) and timed his comebacks well. The match also featured some pretty cool spots, like Jericho's one sweet chin music. The only complaint I have here is the wrong guy went over, but that doesn't take away from the actual match, which was fantastic. ***** World Heavyweight Championship Triple H (c) vs. Booker T The match is very good, but suffers from a dead crowd. A lot of back and forth early and then some good psychology with Triple H and Flair working on Booker's leg. ***1/4 Streetfight 20 Years in the making Hulk Hogan vs. Vince Mcmahon Surprisingly good stuff here. The match had some good psycology to start with Vince going after Hogan's arm, but they eventually leave the ring and it turns into a real streetfight with chairs and ladders being used. The match features some good brawling, some cool spots and a surprise appearance making it one of the most interesting matches all year. ****. After the match, Shane shows up and does nothing, but it was cool seeing him on TV anyway. The Rock vs. Steve Austin (Part III) Good brawl, with a bunch of near falls and a lot of intensity. Austin couldn't have asked for a better retirement match. Not only was the match good, but it put both guys over (meaning that he gets to say he did the right thing and jobbed and he wasn't even hurt by it), was the last chapter of a classic rivalry and it was on the grandest stage of them all, WrestleMania. ***1/2 9) WWE Championship Kurt Angle (c) Vs Brock Lesnar I thought this match would be a dissapointment considering most peoples expectations, but I have to admit, it definitely delivered. Great psycology, great flow and great story. ****3/4 All I can say about this show is "wow". Just an awesome show. This card boasts 3 ****+ matches, something no other show I have seen has, was well built up and had FIVE main events. If you want to buy a WWE DVD and don't already have this, you should definitely pick this up.
Movie Review: WrestleMania comes to Seattle Summary: 5 Stars
Wrestlemania XIX was an improvement on Wrestlemania X8 from 2002, not that X8 was bad. Below I have reviewed the whole event:INTRO: WWE Superstars reflecting on Wrestlemania, and what it means to them, blah blah blah > "Wrestlemania is the chance to live forever" echoes us into the opening video package, leading to.... #1: Cruiserweight Championship: Matt Hardy (champ) vs. Rey Mysterio: Good curtain-jerker but a bit too short, about 5 1/2 minutes of high flying moves and pops for Mysterio, including the 619. Overall good. *** After a pointless Miller LIght Catfight Girls segment, Limp Bizkit plays "ROllin" to an indifferent crowd live at Safeco Field and an indifferent crowd watching at home.... #2: Undertaker vs. Big ShowA-train This was supposed to be A tag team match, but SHow/Train attacked Nathan Jones before the event started. decent match. ** 1/2. After another pointless Catfight Girls segment... #3: Women's Title: Trish Stratus vs. Jazz vs. Victoria (champ) ok for a women's title match, but basically killing time....** Coach interviews the Rock. #4: WWE Tag Titles: Triple Threat Match. Guerrerros vs. Team Angle (champs) vs. Rhyno/Chris Benoit. Pretty good, certainly better than the women's title match. *** #5: Shawn Michaels vs. Chris Jericho Shawn comes out with his own Pyro-guns,most of which don't work. He gets his own fireworks display from higher rafters of Safeco...once the match starts, it's great. Lots of energy from the crowd. THe pace of the match goes back and forth for 20 minutes. ONe of the best matches on the card. ***** Limp Bizkit performs the official theme of Wrestlemania XIX, "Crack Addict" in case anyone cares. THe crowd certainly doesn't, and with good reason, considering Fred Durst sounds like crap. The Catfight Girls crap comes to an excrutiatingly pointless zenith as they fight with Stacy Kiebler and Tori Wilson with pillows, and we're treated to Coach's tidy whities. Honestly, WWE's got a roster of about 90 wrestlers, was this really necessary to kill time? #6: World Heavyweight Championship: Triple H (champ) vs. Booker T: Good match, about 18 minutes long. Good show put on by both HHH and Booker T. ***1/2. #7: Streetfight 20 Years in The Making: Vince McMahon VS. Hulk Hogan. Great nostalgic match, almost takes you back to the days of kayfabe. Special surprise appearance a rowdy old guy in a skirt..... ***** #8: Stone COld Steve Austin VS. The Rock Good match. NOthing really stands out though. *** #9: WWE CHampionship: Kurt Angle (champ) vs. Brock Lesnar: Great way to end Wrestlemania. Great display of REAL wrestling holds to start the match. WOrth the price of the dvd just to see Brock's botched Shooting Star Press in which he almost breaks his neck. ***** Ends with a video recap set to the official WMXIX theme "Crack Addict" by Limp Bizkit. EXTRAS: THere's a lot. WOrld Tag Team CHampionship from Sunday Night Heat, Nathan Jones attacked, mini documentaries on celebrities at WM, the first WM, the undertaker and Hulk Hogan at wrestlemania. Bobby Heenan and Gene Okerlund giving their thoughts on Hogan vs. McMahon, McMahon training vignettes, Edge's WM media tour, and commercials for WM XIX. Great Wrestlemania DVD Package.
Movie Review: What a PPV! Summary: 5 Stars
Wow! Where Royal Rumble and No Way Out fell short, Wrestlemania 19 comes through in a pinch to give us what may be the greatest show of the year. I'd put it up there as one of the best Wrestlemanias ever. And although the DVD was expensive, it turned out to be worth every penny. No settling for VHS this time--this PPV meant more to me. It's at Safeco Field in Seattle, Washington with 54,097 people in attendance--not that high compared to previous classic 'Manias, and the crowd just doesn't make enough noise, so it's up to you to get excited. First came a cruiserweight title match between Matt Hardy and Rey Mysterio. It was a very good contest worthy of opening the show, but surprisingly short. Matt, using various tactics, managed to retain his belt this time. Then Limp Bizkit (why them in particular?) came out to perform "Rollin'", the old theme music of Undertaker. Sure enough, out came the Deadman on his motorcycle to take on Big Show and A-Train in a handicap match. I don't know why people are bashing this one; I really enjoyed it. Nathan Jones, Undertaker's previously injured partner, came out to settle the score at the end. Tombstone piledriver was great. After that we were treated to a triple-threat women's match, undoubtably the best wrestling match involving women I've ever seen in my life. However, the ridiculous pillow fight that would occur later involving Stacy Kiebler, Torrie Wilson, and the insipid Miller Lite Catfight Girls proved that all hope was lost. No matter. Another good match was the triple tag team bout for the tag titles, in which Team Angle somehow retained their prizes against Los Guerreros and Rhyno + Chris Benoit. Then came the later half of the show, and by far the best. Shawn Michaels and Chris Jericho put on a wonderful match, only with Jericho still being an ass at the end. Too bad. Then there's Booker T challenging Triple H for that G.D. heavyweight title. Have Trips lose it already! He's had the belt long enough since Eric Bischoff gave it to him for some reason. A great match, and the ending is all too familiar, as you've probably heard by now. If I had to pick the best match of the night, though, it would be Hulk Hogan and Vince McMahon in the street fight. Sure the entire story it's built on is ridiculous if you know anything at all about Hogan and Vince's relationship, but this was incredible. One reason not to let anyone under 10 watch this PPV: Vince's horrible, bloody face peering up over the ring apron from outside as he gets a pipe may seriously give them nightmares. McMahon also legdrops Hogan through the announce table, probably the best bump in the show. Roddy Piper interferes to take Hogan out. And still, Hulkamania runs wild! Incredible! The Rock and Steve Austin are next. It's probably not as thrilling as WM X-7, but still one hell of a confrontation, with Rock achieving his last dream with a pinfall over his rival at Wrestlemania! Any of the past 4 matches could have easily main-evented a regular PPV, but the grand stage is given to Kurt Angle and Brock Lesnar: truly a great technical contest with outstanding moves all through. I don't know how Angle did it with his injury, or how Brock executed a Shooting Star Press. But somehow, it happens, my friends. Don't hesitate; buy this memorable PPV and enjoy it for yourself! Best PPV I ever watched!!
Movie Review: Excellent Summary: 5 Stars
Cruiserweight Title: Matt Hardy v Rey Mysterio After a short match, Matt Hardy illegally used the ropes to pin Rey Mysterio to retain the Cruiserweight Title. Short, disappointing, and could have been a lot better. **A-Train & Big Show v Undertaker After Nathan Jones came down to kick Big Show in the head, Undertaker was able to score a Tombstone Piledriver on A-Train for the pinfall. * Women's Title: Trish v Victoria v Jazz Trish won after she kicked Victoria in the head and got the pinfall. Quite impressive for a women's match. **1/2 SmackDown! Tag Titles: Team Angle v Rhyno & Benoit v Los Guerreros After Rhyno hit the Gorre on Chavo, Shelton Benjamin was able to steel the pin to retain the titles. Matt Hardy v Rey Mysterio was disappointing -- this was even more disappointing. **3/4 Shawn Michaels v Chris Jericho This was an excellent, long match between two rivals, where lots of wrestling moves and counters were performed in the match throughout. Out of nowhere, HBK was able to roll up Jericho for the 1-2-3 to end the brilliant match. After the bel rung, HBK offered to shake Y2J's hand, but Jericho lured him in to a trap and gave him a thunderous low-blow, and then left Shawn lying in the ring. ****1/2 RAW World Heavyweight Title: Triple H v Booker T Out of nowhere, Triple H hit the Pedigree on Booker T for the pinfall to retain his title. Surprisingly good match. *** Street Fight: Hulk Hogan v Vince McMahon This match was brutal. Rowdy Roddy Piper surprised everyone when he made an appearance and smacked Hogan in the head with a pipe. Vince covered his opponent, but Hogan kicked out and was soon able to come back with three consecutive leg-drops to the owner for the pinfall. Better than I expected. **3/4 The Rock v Stone Cold Steve Austin After both men's finishers were exchanged one after the other, Rock hit a Rock Bottom, but Austin kicked out. Rock hit another one, but again, Austin kicked out. A third Rock Bottom was finally enough to keep the Rattlesnake down for the 1-2-3. Not as good as Rock-Austin from WM X-7, but still a great effort. **** SmackDown! WWE Championship: Brock Lesnar v Kurt Angle After an amazing wrestling match, Brock scored with the F-5 --but Angle kicked out. Angle soon applied with the Ankle Lock, but Brock made it to the ropes and was able to counter the Angle Slam into another F-5. Instead of going for the pin, Lesnar decided to go up to the top rope to try his Shooting Star Press, in which his accidentally missed Kurt and landed on his head. Brock looked to be dazed. Angle got a two-count off the miss, and then the Next Big Thing was finally able to hit a third F-5, which was enough to keep Angle down for the three-count. After the match, the two men shook hands and hugged each other in a show of respect after the outstanding wrestling match. The match deducts 1/4* because of the ending where Brock misses the SSP, but it was still an amazing effort by both men - especially Kurt Angle, knowing the condition that his neck was in. ****3/4 Excellent PPV, with many great matches included. The first four matches were quite bad, but the show makes up for it with all the others. Therefore, WrestleMania XIX is highly recommended -- not the best WrestleMania we've ever head, but still very good. Final Score (/10): 9.0
