Movie Reviews of WWE WrestleMania April 2, 2000Movie Review: Quantity Over Quality Card Summary: 3 StarsAnother DVD that brings me down to memory lane with the biggest event of the year, WrestleMania. I remember that this event had a lot of hype but at the same time, a lot of expectations considering that the previous WrestleMania (WM XV) was a disaster. However with all the hype, this one is not as bad as the previous Mania but it falls short in topping any of the other Mania events due to poor booking & way too many fillers. Luckily, there are other matches on this card that will still hold your attention.
The Godfather & D'Lo Brown vs Big Bossman & Bull Buchanan. After a strange performance by Ice T, this was an average opener that was really nothing special past the fact that it showed how underrated D'Lo was at the time while Bossman & Buchanan did a few nice moves.
Hardcore Battle Royal for Crash's Hardcore Title. This match was designed to succeed & fail at the same time. The purpose of the match is that a number of wrestlers will compete at one time with a time limit of 15 minutes & the one that has the title at the end of the limit will be the champion. This was the typical hardcore action that we tend to see during the Attitude Era in which all the wrestlers hit each other with weapons non-stop while it being comical & just repetitive at times. The ending was controversial & showed how off the match became.
T&A vs Steve Blackman & Al Snow. As Mick Foley quoted, "You won't see an Al Snow greatest matches DVD", & that is the case here as this match was "just there" & dull at times where you would think the crowd died. One more thing, I tried focusing on Trish for the rest of the contest but the stupid mascot ruined that for me.
Triangle Ladder Match: WWF Tag Team Champions The Dudley Boyz vs Edge & Christian vs The Hardy Boyz. If there is only one reason to see this event, it is this match. Despite, numerous ladder matches, this one still holds up well. E&C along with the Hardyz topped their performance from No Mercy, except the Dudleyz are added to the mix. Highlights include Jeff having a ladder thrown in his face, high spots between all six, or even the exciting finish which also involves Jeff flying off a twenty foot ladder onto Bubba Ray through a table. There are just too many other spots to mention but I heavily enjoyed this one & for me this was the match of the night.
Kat Fight: Terri vs The Kat w/Val Venis as the referee. After a classic match, we get a wrestlecrap moment in the making. Skip.
Too Cool & Chyna vs The Radicals. This was an enjoyable six person tag match that felt like it was missing something. The only person that did not look well in the match was Chyna but than again she is in the ring with three of the best like Eddie Guerrero, Dean Malenko & Perry Saturn, who at this time were very underrated, while Too Cool were decent here.
Triple Threat Two Fall Match: Intercontinental/European Champion Kurt Angle vs Chris Jericho vs Chris Benoit. Another match that picked the event up from where it was as these three meshed well & put on a great technical wrestling match that for some reason was rarely see at this time. My only complain was the rushed finish as these three were not given enough time to showcase more of their talent but still great match.
Kane & Rikishi vs X-Pac & Road Dogg. For those who don't know, Undertaker was suppose to be Kane's partner but he was injured so Rikishi took his place. Nothing noteworthy in this one, other than Kane continuing his Mania Record against Pete Rose, which is still kinda funny.
Fatal Four-way Elimination Match & A McMahon In Every Corner: WWF Champion Triple H w/Stephanie vs The Rock w/Vince vs Big Show w/Shane vs Mick Foley w/Linda. For those history fans, this was the first time that a multi-man style contest for the WWF Title was decided at WrestleMania & as well as the only main event that changed not once but five times during the road to Mania. This resembled just about every other multi-man main event at a PPV in which it was a well placed brawl with some nice spots here & there, along with Foley taking a sick table spot that did not go as planned & was probably more dangerous than any of the moves that he did in Hell In A Cell the month before. Once Show & Foley are elminated, Rock & Triple H put on an entertaining match (like always) with some nice back & forth action while the McMahons add to the contest. The finish was considered a shocker but I saw it coming & it ended the match on a bad note despite how great the storyline would soon evolve into. The aftermath was something to see which helps the rating.
DVD EXTRAS:
Disc 1 has the Triple Call Commentary for the Jericho/Benoit/Angle match, each very good. Angle brags about his success, and whines about getting screwed. Jericho is his usual sarcastic self, and just seems to have fun watching the match. Benoit gives us some background on his overseas travels, keeping things grounded and calm. Again, the Triple Call is an excellent bonus. Disc 1 also has histories on a few of the matches, and a brief behind-the-scenes featurette.
* Disc 2 was amazing for its time, and it's still pretty good. Each of the first 15 WrestleManias gets their own 12-to-14 minute coverage. Some of them are very well covered, while a few are quite the bore. Keep in mind, that there are barely any interviews or non-kayfabe moments. Also, some "WrestleManias" have all matches recapped, while some just focus on the main events. I hope the WWE considers improving upon for future "WrestleMania" DVDs, because I'd love to see this good first-try evolve into greatness.
Overall, for the biggest event of the year, I did not think it was the best from 2000 as I enjoyed events like the Royal Rumble, SummerSlam, Fully Loaded & Survivor Series more than this (Forget that, the next month's Backlash made this event forgettable). But there are still three great matches that are worth seeing (Ladder Match, I.C./European, & WWF Title matches) so I would get this only if you like WrestleManias or cheap price.
