Movie Reviews of WWE: The Best of RAW 15th AnniversaryMovie Review: Uncut, Uncooked, Uncensored....15 Years Later Summary: 5 Stars
Monday Night RAW has been the show that defined sports entertainment over the past 15 years now. On WWE's second attempt to celebrate an anniversary of this show (the first one was RAW X which sucked), they got it right by acknowledging most of the historic moments in this show.
Some memories are shown in full while some were just recaps & highlights (like the ECW invasion was the same chapter they showed in the ECW documentary while the DX invasion of WCW was the same Confidential piece from before with the interview segments removed). Also in this set, you'll get popups of additional information regarding the superstars involved. Also since it advertises on the box (along with pictures) of Big Show chokeslamming Undertaker through the ring & Hornswoggle being Vince McMahon's son...they aren't on here.
You already have a list of what moments from RAW to expect on this DVD so I won't repeat but here are the matches on this set:
Mr. Perfect vs. Ric Flair - It was only the second episode of RAW and we already have our first historic match here as the stipulation for this one was that the loser must leave the WWE. This went going back & forth with even Perfect bleeding early into the match. It was a good match for television standards at that time (doesn't match their series years later in WCW though) as Flair lost & wouldn't return to the WWE for almost 9 years. As a side note, pay attention to the commentary by Bobby Heenan in this match as he was just so biased towards Flair & against Perfect that it was just comical.
Jan. '93
The Kid vs. Razor Ramon - All I can say is don't take a bathroom break here as you'll miss what is still concidered to be one of the biggest upsets in not just RAW but probably WRESTLING history here.
May '93
Intercontinental Champion Shawn Michaels vs. Marty Jannetty - On the same night that we saw the biggest upset in RAW history at that time, we also saw the first title change in RAW history. Shawn Michaels was bragging about being a champion & threw out an open challenge which was accepted by his former tag team partner & the guy who over a year earlier threw through a window in Marty Jannetty. This was highly competitve as both men mixed it up with some ground moves along with occassionally flying around. With Shawn being distracted by a "perfectly" thrown towel, Marty won the championship...while months later, both men would win the honor of his match being voted on as the Match Of The Year.
May '93
WWE Champion Bret Hart vs. 1-2-3 Kid - This was the match that defined the image WWE was trying to establish under it's "New Generation" era. This was during the time when Bret Hart as champion took on all challengers regardless if they were a face/heel or any other factor leading to rare matches like this one where his opposition in The Kid was actually faster than Bret and used a martial arts type of offense which was also different than most of his others challengers did. I don't know how else to describe this as anything less than a pure athletic contest that showcased Bret as an honorable champion, left both men leaving strong, & worthy of the reception it got afterwards.
July '94
Shawn Michaels vs. Owen Hart - This was the night after Survivor Series & Shawn's second match back after he was attacked outside a bar a month earlier. The match itself was nice for what it was but the bigger story here was the move Owen gave Shawn that would be infamous throughout the rest of his career & what happened to Shawn that left everyone...including the announcers, Jim Cornette, and Owen himself...speechless.
Nov. '95
No Holds Barred Match: Undertaker vs. Mankind - This is one of those matches where most of the action took place on the outside than the inside as it was just a brawl around the ringside area for minutes with the steel steps & chairs being used at various times while Taker focused on attacking the hand used for the mandible claw. They didn't enter the ring until the last two minutes but this was the typical formula you would expect from their matches eventhough it was probably their weakest encounter from their series.
Dec. '96
European Championship Match: British Bulldog vs. Owen Hart - This was the finals of the tournament to crown the first European Champion...the first new championship introduced into the WWE since the Intercontinental Title around 18 years earlier. At this time, Owen & Bulldog were not only tag team partners but Tag Team Champions for around 5 months at this point. This was a very technical match with both men continuing to show mutual respect towards each other with the crowd getting behind the hometown favorite in the Bulldog. Things didn't start getting dirty till the end with Owen faking an injury but still, this was a great match & damn near perfect way to introduce the new championship.
Mar. '97
Flag Match: Steve Austin, Dude Love, Undertaker vs. Hart Foundation - This match was joined in progress for the last 5 mins. and was really nothing noteworthy past the fact that this match was in Canada so the Harts were the heavy favorites.
July '97
(Christmas With DX) WWE European Champion Shawn Michaels vs. Triple H - This really wasn't even a match as it was classic D-Generation X once again playing mind games with the crowd & defying authority. This match was just like WCW's "fingerpoke" between Hulk Hogan & Kevin Nash except this one was actually entertaining & funny.
Dec. '97
(D-Generation X)
No Disqualification Match: WWE Champion The Rock vs. Mankind - One of the most emotional title wins that "put alot of butts in the seats" as Foley wins the title for the first time with help from Stone Cold. This match itself isn't as good as their Survivor Series match or their later matches like the Halftime Heat match but still, it was very emotional.
Jan. '99
(Mick Foley's Greatest Hits & Misses)
Pat Patterson & Gerald Brisco vs. Mean Street Posse - All I can say here is that this is just classic entertainment from the entrance to the celebration afterwards...BROTHER!
May '99
WWE Champion Triple H vs. Chris Jericho - After Chris Jericho was able to convince Triple H to put the World Title on the line, Jericho revealed that he hired the Acolytes Protection Agency to make sure he got a fair shot at the championship. This match was just nonstop fast paced action from start to finish with the ending that shocked the world. However due to the surroundings that happened towards the end & after this match, this has been refered to as "The Match That Never Happened" but this was definately one of the best matches in the entire "Triple H vs. Chris Jericho" series that have gone on throughout the years.
Apr. '00
Shawn Michaels vs. Shelton Benjamin - This was definately a classic match in the history of RAW as two of the most athletic performers went at each other here to the point where J.R. had to say it was one of the best matches on RAW in a while. Shelton took it HBK in the beginning with some amature wrestling & kept getting the upperhand on Shawn including countering HBK's superplex into a crossbody & later countering HBK's superkick into his own side kick. HBK turned it up as the match went on & went toe to toe with Shelton including delivering a Sweet Chin Music that was so impactful...they used it during the opening video of RAW for a long time after this match.
May '05
Ironman Match: Shawn Michaels vs. Kurt Angle - I'm sorry but I can't describe this match even if my life depended on it past the fact that this was another classic match in the series Shawn & Kurt had this year ranging from WrestleMania to Vengeance to this 30 min. Ironman match. These are just two men who bring out the best in each other & this was no expection.
Oct. '05
WWE Champion Rob Van Dam vs. John Cena vs. Edge - This was one of those triple threats where it was constant action throughout the match with Edge once again being the "ultimate opportunist" in the end to once again become WWE Champion.
July '06
(Edge: Decade Of Decadance)
Street Fight Match: Shawn Michaels vs. Edge - As it was pointed out during the one of "popups" during this match & shown later on Edge's DVD set that this was the second street fight between these men on RAW with the first one happening two years earlier. During this time, Randy Orton & Edge teamed together to form "Rated RKO" in an effort to take out D-Generation X and they already acomplished half of that with Triple H being out of action due to injury. This was a different Shawn than we were used to at the time because he was all business & serious from the start as he used his belt & a trash can in the early moments while other weapons like steel steps, a ladder, a biker chain would come into play with Edge also taking a hard chair shot. Both men were heavily bleeding in this match that can only really be described in two words: physically intense.
Jan. '07
Now it's obvious that some moments will not be included in here for one reason or another (Chris Benoit) & there are some questionable choices for what is (Big Boss Man?) & isn't included (no Owen Hart or Eddie tributes?) but if you can get past that factor, the positives of moments & matches outweigh the negatives so this is a DVD that a fan of WWE could enjoy. I highly recommend getting this...even if it takes a while with all the post-Christmas sellouts. And for those horny men wondering, Lita's nipple slip during the sex celebration is edited out.
Side Note: The bonus disc available at Walmart stores contains the first episode of RAW. And for those with the WWE 24/7 channel looking for that bonus disc, they will be showing that episode in January 2008.
