Movie Review: Will WWE end the year 2007 strong?
Summary: 4 Stars
Survivor Series has been somewhat disappointing, for me, in the last two years & considering how the quality of WWE PPVs were going in late 2007, I entered this one with caution. Then unexpectedly, I witnessed one of WWE's best efforts of 2007 with only one match that should have been scratched off the surface of the earth.
ECW Champion CM Punk vs John Morrison vs The Miz. A good way to begin the show as these three mixed very well together & truly delivered a solid contest that features some nice spots & everyone looking strong at the same time.
Mickie James, Maria, Torrie Wilson, Michelle McCool, Kelly Kelly vs. Beth Phoenix, Melina, Victoria, Layla, Jillian Hall. This match was not bad either, even though it would have been nice to see another elimination match on the card. This is mostly remembered for Melina messing up her entrance & getting the kiss of death from Mickie. I knew I liked it..
World Tag Team Champions Lance Cade & Trevor Murdock vs. Cody Rhodes & Hardcore Holly. I have to be honest, I did not get into this match even though I do understand that Cade & Murdock are one of the best in this division. They carried Holly & Rhodes to an average match but nothing special.
Elimination Match: Triple H, Jeff Hardy, Rey Mysterio, Kane vs. Umaga, Big Daddy V, Finlay, MVP, Mr. Kennedy. Unfortunately, Matt Hardy was injured so he could not participate in this match. This is actually a very good match & one of the best matches of the night as the story surrounding this match was that Triple H's team was down the whole match before staging a comeback of their own. Solid effort by all involved.
Hornswoggle vs. Great Khali. WHAT THE HELL IS THIS? This was the match that I mentioned that should have never been made. Nothing entertaining or funny here & god I have never been so happy to see Finlay because that meant this dumb match was over.
WWE Champion Randy Orton vs Shawn Michaels. This Cyber Sunday rematch had two unique stipulations: If HBK used Sweet Chin Music, then he would be disqualified & never get another title shot as long as Orton is still champion. However, if Orton gets disqualified, then he would lose the title. This match was better than their previous encounter since it did not feature a lackluster finish but it also had both men deliver a great wrestling match surrounding with HBK using moves that he has never used before like the Sharpshooter & The Crippler Crossface. The aftermath add more to this solid encounter.
Hell in a Cell: World Heavyweight Champion Batista vs The Undertaker. This was the fourth time that these two were going to face off in 2007 & just like their entire rivalry, this was an awesome battle. I would not rank this one as the best Cell match that I have witnessed but it did have it's moments. Spots included Taker being Batista bombed through a table & Taker delivering the tombstone on the steel steeps. The ending involved the return of Edge who cost Taker the title & help set up what has become one of the feuds of 2008. Once again, great match.
DVD Extras are only the return of Chris Jericho from the following night on RAW. Nice to see him back.
Overall, this was the best edition of the Survivor Series that I have seen in quite some time. Other than the Hornswoogle segment, this event was entertaining from top to bottom & along with Backlash, it was the best WWE event of 2007.
