Movie Review: SummerSlam Loses A Bit Of It's Luster Here
Summary: 3 Stars
SummerSlam was a perfect example of where the WWE was at in 2003. If you wanted to watch pure wrestling, then you would check out SmackDown but if you wanted entertainment or segment, then watch RAW. That was the case here as for the most part, the SmackDown team delivered while RAW did not live up to it's potential.
World Tag Team Champions La Resistance vs Dudley Boyz. The crowd was really into this match but this was an average opener that turned into one of those "put a storyline over" moments due to the ending involving the camera man that set their Tables match a month later at Unforgiven.
Undertaker vs A-Train w/Sable. Honestly, A-Train does nothing for me as a performer but Taker did his best here & got the best performance possible from A-Train, something that Benoit could not do at No Mercy a few months later. The ending involved the return of Stephanie McMahon which involved a cat-fight with Sable.
Shane McMahon vs Eric Bischoff. This was a segment more than anything else as Shane dominates till he gets attacked by a surprise heel turn from Jonathon Coachman. It's 2 on 1 till Stone Cold Steve Austin comes out & I think we all know what is about to happen. Not one of Shane's best but it was a little entertaining.
U.S. Champion Eddie Guerrero vs Chris Benoit vs Rhyno vs Tajiri. The most underrated match of the night & if it was not for the next match, it would have stolen the show. All four put on a great performance & delivered a wrestling clinic with the comedy of Eddie trying to "Lie, Cheat & Steal" his way to victory adding more to the contest. Great match.
WWE Champion Kurt Angle vs Brock Lesnar. Easily, the best match of the night that topped their WrestleMania contest. Words don't do this match justice as it was just a great wrestling match that you would expect from these two with Lesnar heavily putting over his new heel gimmick along with Angle just never giving up. The finish includes a cameo from Vince McMahon & a breathtaking sequence.
No Holds Barred: Kane vs Rob Van Dam. The stipulation was added right before the match started & was an important match in the beginning of Kane's "unmasked" character. Honestly, the match was mostly Kane dominating the contest with RVD getting a few shots here & there before becoming overcome to the monster.
Elimination Chamber Match: World Heavyweight Champion Triple H vs Goldberg vs Shawn Michaels vs Chris Jericho vs Kevin Nash vs Randy Orton. This was a HUGE stepdown from the previous Chamber match as not everyone had a chance to stand out. In fact, the only person that did was Goldberg as he went through almost every single person like nothing before having the title slip through his fingers, followed by an aftermath beating by Evolution. This set up the Triple H/Goldberg feud for Unforgiven.
In the end, this event was a Big stepdown from the previous classic SummerSlam as most of the matches here either did not live up or were just there to continue storylines. The SmackDown matches delivered but RAW needed to make up for this night.
