Movie Reviews of WWE: Hell in a CellMovie Review: A Demonic Structure Custom Built For Injury Summary: 5 StarsThis match has shorted careers & eventually ended them for not just wrestlers but anyone around including referees. Relive the memories of the infamous Hell In The Cell match on DVD.
Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels (Badd Blood '97) - This set the standard for HITC matches as for being the first one, this was really something to watch as they dished out heavy punishment like never before & used everything they could get their hands on such as the steel steps & chairs. HBK's fall towards the end would later be heavily overshadowed by Mankind's fall less than a year later. It was also during this match that saw the debut of Kane. This was something to see for that time...and still is something to see to this day.
Steve Austin & Undertaker vs. Mankind & Kane ("RAW" June '98) - This happened two weeks before the Taker vs. Mankind match. This was more of a segment than anything else as Austin fought both Kane & Mankind outside the cell while Undertaker locked the door & beat up Paul Bearer in the cell. Kane went onto the top to try to get in the cell before Austin followed & they got into a brawl there. This lasted around 5 mins. & again, was more of a segment than an actual match.
Undertaker vs. Mankind (King Of The Ring '98) - This was probably the most famous HITC match & the match that launched Mick Foley into wrestling immortality. He was thrown off the cage, through the cage, dropped on thumbtacks twice...this was the beating of the lifetime.
Mankind vs. Kane ("RAW" Aug. '98) - Unlike the previous Cell encounter on RAW, this was an actual match that was used to continue to build up the "Highway To Hell" storyline leading up to SummerSlam '98. Foley took another fall off the cage (similar to the one HBK took in the first one) that he said hurt him more than the previous Cell match did on his "Hard Knocks & Cheap Pops" DVD. Austin came from under the ring to attack Kane while Taker was locked out the cell & couldn't save him. The same result that happened when Taker attacked Paul Bearer & Kane couldn't save him.
Undertaker vs. Big Boss Man (WrestleMania XV) - This has been known as the worst Cell match of all time to the point where they have highlight packages of previous Cell matches, you don't see footage of this match...and having this happen at WrestleMania only made it worst. The only memorable thing about this match was the aftermath where Big Boss Man was lynched from the top of the Cell by Taker with help from The Brood.
WWE Champion Triple H vs. Cactus Jack (No Way Out '00) - Mick Foley's original retirement match as it was career vs. title here. After their classic Rumble street fight, this match didn't top it but did its job in letting Foley end his career with a bang. The story was about Foley promising to come off the cage onto Triple H so he had the cage locked so they couldn't get out but eventually found a way out after he missed hitting Triple H with the steel steps. The ending involving the flaming "barbie" & Cactus on top the cell was something.
WWE Champion Kurt Angle vs. Steve Austin vs. The Rock vs. Undertaker vs. Rikishi vs. Triple H (Armageddon '00) - This was one of the wildest Cell matches to happen in that it was complete non-stop action throughout the match with each man squaring off with each other at one point of the bout...and even Mr. McMahon making a cameo to try to stop the match. All men eventually did get out eventually & went all over the place with Taker sending Rikishi on the same ride as Foley got over a year earlier & would be the last time someone took a dive off the top of the cage.
Triple H vs. Chris Jericho (Judgment Day '02) - This match proves that this is one of the most dangerous matches in wrestling as referee Tim White's career was effected forever & eventually ended because of this match. The match itself resembled their Last Man Standing match from 2000 & heavily made up for the disappointing WMX8 title match they had months earlier. Fighting in & on top the cell ending with a pedigree on the top of the cell.
WWE Champion Brock Lesnar vs. Undertaker (No Mercy '02) - Another great Hell In The Cell bout as they kept it inside the cage while Taker bled like crazy & sold his wrist injury in a brutal match that saw Lesnar put over as a monster.
WWE Champion Triple H vs. Kevin Nash with Mick Foley as the referee (Bad Blood '03) - The end of what could go down as the worst feud of 2003. Kevin Nash was so "under" (not over) that they brought in Mick Foley as the referee & switched the focus from Nash & Triple H to Foley & Triple H as you saw throughout this match as Triple H eventually attacked Foley with a chair & Foley returned the favor with the Mandible Claw amongst other things. Triple H eventually won the match but this was a very low spot in the Hell In A Cell series.
Shawn Michaels vs. Triple H (Bad Blood '04) - These two go over 45 minutes to give everyone a classic Hell In The Cell match that doesn't depend on someone going outside the cell, falling off the cage, or beating each other down with weapons the whole time to make it memorable. This was just those two beating each other down so badly that even you as the viewer are exhausted at the end of it.
World Champion Batista vs. Triple H (Vengeance '05) - Their third, last, and best encounter. Many hardcore weapons (barbed wire chairs for example) were used. Triple H bleeds buckets once again as Batista wins with a spinebuster on top of the ring steps.
Undertaker vs. Randy Orton (Armageddon '05) - This for the most part came off as a "No Holds Barred" type of match more than a Hell In The Cell match. Weapons were used like a chain & steel steps while everyone bled (including Cowboy Bob & the referee). I personally enjoyed it while some didn't because again...it wasn't as brutal, non-stop high impact or "spotty" like the previous Cell matches were.
DX vs. Big Show, Mr. McMahon, Shane McMahon (Unforgiven '06) - Before the match even started, the NEW Hell In A Cell was really something to see...the thought of anyone going off the top of this one is out the question. This to me was the best match from the whole McMahon/DX feud. It wasn't the best HITC but some of the moves & actions in the cage either make you want to laugh (Show getting constantly kicked in the nuts), puke (Big Show's KISS MY ASS club) or make you cringe (HHH's sledgehammer shot to Vince). There was enough here to keep you entertained throughout the match. And extra credit to Shane McMahon because I really thought the guy was seriously injured after the match but he just knew how to sell really well.
World Champion Batista vs. Undertaker (Survivor Series '07) - Just like their entire series of matches, this was an awesome encounter. It wasn't on the level as Batista's last HITC match with Triple H but still a great performance from both men. Spots involving a table & the ringsteps would happen at times but besides that, it was straight Taker & Batista until the end when Edge interfered & cost Taker the title match.
So out of 15 Hell In The Cell matches, only 3 of them are ones that would be considered flops & this would be considered an ultimate collection for those who are fans of this match & love violence & brutality. This is one collection I would highly recommend.
Side Note: Since this won't be out until the last quarter of the year (October), if you want to know where to find the Cell matches already available on DVD then check out my "Listamania" where you can also find cage matches using different variations of this structure including ones that WCW used dating back to 1989.
