Movie Reviews of WWE - Best of Raw 1-2

Movie Review: Early Years Of WWF Attitude
Summary: 4 Stars

Don't let the title confuse you as this isn't a retro look at the history of RAW unlike the 10 & 15 year anniversary DVD sets that would come out later. These two "volumes" were just highlights of feuds, storylines, and character developments in the WWF during the beginning of the "Attitude Era" in 1998-1999.

Volume One covered the character developments of the WWF top characters throughout the year of 1998 (my personal favorite year). Steve Austin is covered with highlights of him winning the WWF Title & the early months of the feud with Mr. McMahon including such incidents as Vince getting arrested, Austin screwed out of the title, the zamboni & cement truck incidents, Austin being fired & later rehired by Shane McMahon. The Rock's profile showcased the problems between him & Faarooq that led to him taking over The Nation. Triple H taking over D-Generation X, taking on new members in the New Age Outlaws & X-Pac, and all the havoc they caused with WCW (the Nitro invasion) & The Nation (the infamous paraody) is shown. Mick Foley's personalities from Mankind to Dude Love to Cactus Jack is shown including Terry Funk's arrival as "Chainsaw Charlie" is shown before showing Foley's "Cactus Jack" character leaving because the fans didn't apprechate him. The Undertaker/Kane story from Kane's debut & buildup to their WM14 match is showcased along with footage of both men later injuring Vince McMahon and Undertaker reuniting Paul Bearer. Val Venis' rise (no pun intended) into the WWF is also looked at along with the feud with Kaientai revolving around Val sleeping with their manager's wife.

Volume Two picks up a little bit after where Volume One left off. The Rock winning the WWF Title & becoming the corporate champion and how started the Austin/Taker "Buried Alive" feud that evolved over the next month kicks off the documentry. Highlights of Mankind winning the WWF Title & the trading of the belt between him & the Rock were showcased next along with highlights from their ladder match on RAW where Rock won the belt back. Vince training for the Royal Rumble is showcased next before moving on to the story behind Mark Henry & Chyna including footage of their date and the incident with Chyna's "friend" Samy. Undertaker is covered from the stalking of Stephanie, his Ministry merging with the Corporation, and his higher power being revealed as Vince McMahon himself. The Rock is up next as the incidents involving Austin's beer truck, his feud with Austin surrounding the Smoking Skull belt, and his exit from the Corporation is highlighted. The evolution from Triple H in DX to becoming "The Game" is showcased next including footage of him winning the WWF Title for the first time. Speaking of Triple H, the breakup & reunion of DX is also covered along with the beginning of the McMahon-Helsmley era. The debut of "Y2J" Chris Jericho & his feud with Chyna over the Intercontinental Title is also shown. The Rock N' Sock Connection is showcased through their tag team title victory & the famous "This Is Your Life" segment with comments from The Rock. The documentry closes out with a highlight package of 1999.

During this volume of the DVD set, two matches were shown during the documentry.

The Corporate Royal Rumble - A Royal Rumble match between the Corporation & DX with the highlight being Chyna eliminating Mr. McMahon to gain the #30 spot in the Royal Rumble.

Vince McMahon vs. Shane McMahon - The Corporate Ministry attacked Vince before the match so it was mostly Shane beating down his dad before Vince came with with the stunner for the win.

Other complete matches were available in the DVD extras section:

Stone Cold's Mystery Partner (Steve Austin & Vince McMahon vs. The Rock & D'Lo Brown) - Vince picked himself as Austin's mystery partner for this match after he made himself the special referee for Austin's upcoming match against Dude Love. So this was just a glorified handicap match for Vince to continue to stack the deck against Austin with Patterson & Brisco getting involved on the outside as well before Dude Love came in at the end.

The Stooges At Work (Steve Austin vs. Pat Patterson & Gerald Brisco) - Commissioner Sgt. Slaughter was the referee and even knocked down Austin at the beginning of the match causing a double team before Austin quickly recovered & of course, "stomped a mudhole" in both men, Slaughter, and Dude Love who also got involved before McMahon got involved dressed up as a fan from the audience.

Where's The Undertaker? (Hell In The Cell Match: Steve Austin & Undertaker vs. Kane & Mankind) - This happened two weeks before the King Of The Ring. This was more of a segment than anything else as Austin fought both Kane & Mankind outside the cell while Undertaker locked the door & beat up Paul Bearer in the cell. Kane went onto the top to try to get in the cell before Austin followed & they got into a brawl there. This lasted around 5 mins. & again, was more of a segment than an actual match.

Intercontinental Champion The Rock vs. X-Pac - Earlier in the night, Triple H lost the European Title to D'Lo Brown so this was DX's turn to try to take a title away from The Nation. This was an average back & forth match between the two that saw D'Lo, Triple H, and even Chyna getting involved at times.

Undertaker vs. Mankind - Mankind returned to RAW weeks after being attacked by Kane at SummerSlam & both men came to the ring with sledgehammers. They were brawling on the outside with Undertaker using the ringsteps on Mankind's fingers & throwing him through a plywood table. From there, Kane got involved along with chairs being used as well with The Rock making a cameo appearence at the end.

Undertaker & Kane vs. The Rock, Mankind, Ken Shamrock - For some reason, this match is under the title of "European Title On The Line" eventhough the European Title has absolutely nothing to do with this match. The story here was that the 3 man team couldn't get along with each other as they fought each other in a cage match the night before at the Breakdown PPV...and that was evident as all 3 partners were fighting each other for minutes before Undertaker & Kane even came out to the ring. From there, it was just an average match with the partners still fighting & throwing cheap shots at each other on occassion.

Mr. Socko's Debut (Mankind vs. Mark Henry) - This was short & nothing much past the first time Mankind used Mr. Socko in a match.

Shane Gets Gold (Shane McMahon & Kane vs. European Champion X-Pac & Triple H) - This was on RAW the night after the St. Valentine's Day Masscre PPV with the European Title. This was a short match that went back & forth between the DX team & Kane. Shane got tagged in & got beat down before Chyna interfeared to aid Shane McMahon pinning X-Pac to win the European Title.

Chyna Goes Jewery Shopping (Chyna vs. Pat Patterson & Gerald Brisco) - Nothing more past a comedic match between all three with such moments as Patterson & Brisco constantly bickering against each other, copping feels on Chyna's chest & going for a low blow...on a woman.

"All Right, All Right - I Quit!" (I Quit Match: WWF Champion The Rock vs. Triple H) - This was mostly a brawl between both men going all over the ringside area complete with both men giving responces to the "Do you quit?" question like only The Rock & Triple H could. Triple H kept beating down The Rock until the Corporation threatened Chyna so Triple H quit only for her to turn on Triple H & join the Corporation.

Hardcore Banana Split (Hardcore Champion Hardcore Holly vs. Bart Gunn) - The story here was that they were former tag team partners (New Midnight Express) & Bob Holly was the only person Bart Gunn didn't knock out in the brawl for all. Typical weapons/brawling fest with a few funny props like a watermelon & flour sack before a masked "Dr. Death" Steve Williams threw Gunn off the stage for Holly to get the win.

A Death Defying Leap (Steel Cage Match: Test vs. British BUlldog) - Mostly a brawl but nothing special past Test's & Shane McMahon's dives off the top of the cage.

A Mammoth Showdown (WWF Champion Undertaker vs. Big Show) - This is the infamous match where Big Show chokeslams Undertaker through the ring.

Tag Titles Up For Grabs (WWF Tag Team Champions Acolytes vs. Hardy Boyz) - Bradshaw was playing off a concussion given to him by Kane on Heat. Real short match that saw the Hardy Boyz gain their first of many World Tag Team Championships.

Kane Speaks (WWF Tag Team Champions Acolytes vs. Kane & X-Pac) - Another short match that show Kane & Pac win back the tag team titles complete with Kane saying his first words in his normal voice..."SUCK IT!"

The Voice Box Gimmick (WWF Tag Team Champions The Rock & Mankind vs. Kane & Triple H) - Triple H volunteered as Kane's partner since X-Pac no showed the match. This was mostly about Kane not trusting Triple H thoughout the match so he refused to tag him which ended up having Triple H attack Kane with the sledgehammer.

The T.I.T. Tourney (Edge & Christian vs. Hardy Boyz) - This was the second match in their series for Terri's managerial services and was a quick fast paced match. They would go on to have more memorable & better encounters.

Other DVD extras include Steve Austin tossing the Intercontinental Title into a river, Shawn Michaels calling out Undertaker before their Royal Rumble match, Austin confronting Vince about if he wants him to become WWF Champion, Kane tombstoning the Phoenix Suns' gorilla, the Austin vs. McMahon "match" that resulted in Dude Love's return, Paul Bearer & Kane digging up Undertaker's parents, the "Love Shack" segment where Foley denounced the Dude Love gimmick before McMahon motivates him into his hardcore match with Terry Funk, and Triple H (dressed as Goldust) uses a flame thrower on Kane.

In the end, if you were a fan of the attitude era of the WWF then it's a nice look back during the early WWF years of the big wrestling boom during the "Monday Night Wars." I recommend.
