Movie Review: Art house Weirdness fuses Sex and Communism
Summary: 5 Stars
WR is one of the strangest movies I have ever seen, but it also ranks among the best. Makavejev blends both documentary and fictional narratives to create a movie that examines how sex and politics fuse to create "true revolutionaries". This movie is not for those who are seeking a linear narrative or a movie that is easy to watch, it is challenging, but ultimately rewarding.
I screened this film for a class on Socialism and Feminism in Film, and what was interesting about this film compared to the majority of the films we screened was that this film, while critical of the realism of communist regimes, still supported a revolutionary lifestyle. This film was also firmly ground in theoretical concepts of Marxism and psychoanalysis--as demonstrated by the beginning portion on Reich--and it's interesting to pair this with another film that uses Reich's theories, The Raspberry Reich.
