Movie Reviews of Von Ryan's Express

Movie Review: I'm in charge here
Summary: 5 Stars

The 60's were filled with WWII movies and ones involving out-witting the Nazis proved an especially favorite genre. Unlike many of these movies, Von Ryan's Express, Sinatra's last big Hollywood box office, has aged very well. Screenplay and direction deserve special commendation. This is a taut and economical plot, filled with standout actors who stay within the bounds of credibility. (Edward Mulhare as the priest put upon to impersonate a Nazi officer does a terrific job with a hairpin role.) Although Sinatra enters the movie clipping his first line with "pal," he stays in tune to the ensemble work. Trevor Howard, playing a far less glamorous role, adds strong counterpart to Sinatra's cooler character. There's one female in the film, played by Raffaella Carrà, and her placement adds exceptional color. All characters, even the villains, are treated with humanist consideration. Suspense and action are topnotch, location filming is breathtaking. Von Ryan's Express has aged well I believe because no sentimentality or macho posturing is employed. The ending is as gritty as any modern-day film viewer could want. A marvelous, possibly flawless, war movie.

Summary of Von Ryan's Express

When U.S. combat pilot Col. Joseph Ryan (Frank Sinatra) is captured by Nazis, he does what it takes to survive prison camp, including, by all appearances, befriend the enemy. Hence, his prison mates give Ryan the insulting nickname ?Von Ryan.? But in time, Ryan takes over from the commanding British officer (Trevor Howard) and masterminds commandeering a train to Switzerland ? with the Nazis in hot pursuit. It?s all blazing action, hair-raising chases and spectacular Italian scenery in this Oscar® nominated* adventure that will blast you full speed ahead until its nail-biting finale!
