Movie Reviews of VolverMovie Review: Almodovar Does It Again Summary: 5 Stars
Volver is another masterpiece from filmmaker Pedro Almodovar which stars Penelope Cruz in an Oscar-nominated performance as Raimunda, a hard working Mother living in Madrid with her daughter. Her sister Sole lives nearby and the pair are extremely close. Their simple lives take a supernatural turn, however, when their deceased Mother comes back into the picture. Or is she? An intriguing and heartfelt portrait of the lives of the women from one family that will never be the same again. Everything about this film screams Almodovar and he is still on top form with this, his twenty-ninth film, examining one of his favourite subjects: women. Penelope Cruz shines in a performance that should have bagged her an Academy Award and the ensemble cast were rightly awarded the Best Actress trophy at the Cannes Film Festival. Unforgettable.
Movie Review: The bitternsweet tale of womanwood! Summary: 5 Stars
A wonderfull story in every aspect and the best performance by Penelope Cruz we've ever seen! Volver is the story of two sisters whose dead mother returns from the crave to reconnect with them. What happened to her and how she died are revealed bit by bit and the outcome is nothing you expected! But Volver is not just that. Volver is the tale of every woman out there, of all sisters, all mothers. It's the tale of the mother-daughter relationship, of family bonds and the hard fight you give to keep them even if they give you little pleasure. It is also the story of women, brave strong, latin American women, who live in poverty and male domination but have discovered through the hardships of their lives that the strength inside of them is all it takes to face death, poverty and violence.
Movie Review: Entertainment Forces Come Together to Make a Masterpiece Summary: 5 Stars
The teaming of Penélope Cruz and Pedro Almodóvar is something to behold. Everytime these two join together, you can always expect something great to result. Volver is no exception. After such mediocre American films, it was nice to see Penélope Cruz go back and make a Spanish langage film. She is absolutely fantastic in this movie and it is perhaps the best film of her carrer. sShe plays the role with such honesty and heart it is difficult not to feel and understand what she is going through. Every action she takes has affects everone around her and the way she is able to deal with everything that happens in her life is whatmakes this film the gem it is. It is easy to see why she was nominated for an oscar.
Movie Review: Once again, Almodovar creates a masterpiece Summary: 5 Stars
Pedro Almodovar has incredible insight into women, and reminds me of a cross between Ingmar Bergman, Fellini and Woody Allen; with a healthy dash of warmth and gentleness that is sometimes lacking in the others.
Penelope Cruz gives a award worthy performance as a young single mother with unresolved issues with her own mother that are slowly revealed; Carmen Maura is amazing in the role of the ghostly mother; Lola Duneas plays the long suffering sister who is unwittingly the one in the middle of her sister and mothers drama. Every actor in this film gives an incredible performance, and it is truly a tribute to Almodovar, who surely will be remembered as one of the finest filmmakers making movies today,
Movie Review: Volver Summary: 5 Stars
Part murder mystery, part ghost story, and 100 percent witty, estrogen-fueled fantasy, Almodovar's story of three generations of women is one of the Spanish director's most exuberant films. Enamored of outcasts and oddballs, Almodovar here introduces an element of the supernatural to make an already compelling story of sex, lies, and secrecy even more intriguing. Channeling her inner Anna Magnani, Cruz is a force of nature bursting with brassy verve and self-confidence, especially during her heart-melting solo rendition of the flamenco song "Volver." Co-stars Dueñas, Maura, and Blanca Portillo, playing a cancer-ridden friend of the family, make this moving, enchanting drama an irresistible ensemble film.
