Movie Reviews of VolverMovie Review: Almodovar Vuelve a Brillar Summary: 5 Stars
Movie Review: Volver y Volver y Volver Summary: 5 Stars
I have never doubted the acting ability of Penelope Cruz. In fact, I have been a fan for quite some time. This, however, must be her best performance to date. She takes you on an emotional ride that is pleasant and exhausting all at the same time and the kick is you don't want the ride to end. It won't matter if you are a male or female...you will fall in love with this portrait and with Penelope Cruz.
Es que la mujer es una maravilla, la cual no hemos vistos en mucho tiempo! Ole! Y Brava!
The entire cast brings a believable life to their characters and you feel them through every scene and miss them when they are not present. Carmen Maura is sheer bliss to watch on the screen.
Almodovar is his usual genius self. Every frame of the film is a painting. He cannot help himself because he is a true artist. I love this story and all of its odd turns. There is something wonderfully sexy about the juxtoposition of food, sexuality and violence that when put together brings a sensation of pleasure you don't often get to experience in American cinema. As a Spaniard by birth, I am proud of this film...as an American I am grateful that these films are making it more into the mainstream.
Here is to an Oscar for Penelope!
Movie Review: Nothing is laid to rest so easily Summary: 5 Stars
Penelope Cruz gives a standout performance as Raimunda in this strange tale of a village where most of the men are lovingly tended to in cemetery plots. The story takes many twists and turns, but principally this is a tale about Raimunda's indefatigable spirit and protection of her daughter. Almodovar captures the rhythm and feeling of small town life in Spain as Raimunda enlists the services of her neighbors to revive a restaurant, which becomes the hub of activities while the owner is away. In so doing, Raimunda hopes to disguise the sinister events that have taken place. Raimunda's sister, Sole, harbors a blithe spirit of sorts, whose return provides the premise for the movie and eventually answers many questions that are put forward. Augustina completes this provincial triptych as a hippie of sorts, who is forced to come to terms with her life when she finds out she has cancer. The characters feed off each other in typical Almodovarian fashion, but it is a conventional movie by his quixotic standards, and one of his most satisfying efforts, as it is sure to appeal across a broad spectrum of viewers, especially given Penelope Cruz' excellent performance.
Movie Review: Almodovar did it again!!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I've seen most of his films; one better than the one before, in a way different in some ways all carrying a deep sense of humanity! We watch drama unfolding to arrive when less expected at the end; always full of hope. It is hard to describe fully what I felt watching VOLVER. To recommend this movie is to say at least; it is so simple yet so complex. The action takes place in the country site of Spain. Penelope Cruz, wife and mother. Very close to her sister, aunt and cousin (I think), a hard working woman that has to put up with a lousy husband. The art that Almodovar uses to carry you through scenes and images it is unique. The dialogue is alive and simple. This movie screams -LIFE in any word and scene. The way of life, long forgotten and ignored is broth for us to enjoy it. I am not going to unveil the subject; if I do that you have nothing left to explore, but I say that is worth watching because so many beautiful scenes from the Spain's country site- so colorful, to the provincial relationships so simple yet so powerful.
Movie Review: Absolutely Delightful! Summary: 5 Stars
Almodovar never fails when it comes to heartfelt entertainment. I'm a huge fan, and "Volver" did not disappoint. The very simple, yet very complicated, scenario is populated by real, fleshed-out characters, given complete interpretations by a stellar cast. Ms. Cruz, of course, is luminous, and her talents belie atrocious handling in Hollywood. Those beautiful eyes say so much, and her control centers the crazy goings on. It's hard to describe the plot, even a bit, without blabbing away vital plot-points, but it's certainly a showcase for women, which is where Sr. Almodovar excels. All of the women fit their roles perfectly, and the great Carmen Maura is back to add endless intrigue. Indeed, so many women with so many completely different issues, in this age of "thankless role for women", is certainly a treasure. The brilliant use of color to enhance the proceedings, as well as the mind-blowing plot(s), put this high on Sr. Almodovar's list of fine achievements.
