Movie Review: Awesome "Voltron" DVD and a classic in anime/cartoons!
Summary: 5 Stars
I've been a diehard "Voltron(Lion Voltron)" fan ever since I saw a rerun of it in the '90's when I was five years old and I love this boxset! It has my favorite "Voltron" characters, the very sneaky, Jawa-like witch, Haggar the Witch, her blue, horned cat, Coba/Cova, and King Zarkon, the evil fish-man king, the main villain of the series. This boxset has the entire Season One in it, from the first episode, where Zarkon captures the Voltron Force, to "The Witch Gets A Facelift", the first episode that I ever saw and my favorite episode of the entire series, where Haggar and Coba go to the Voltron Force's castle, after Haggar sneaks up to and disguises herself as Princess Allura's aunt, Queen Orla, and decides to try to kill Princess Allura and take over the castle, but the Voltron Force find out that Haggar is disguised as Queen Orla, they capture Cova, Haggar reveals who she is, attacks them and almost succeeds in getting rid of them, but King Alfor's ghost nullifies her magic, so she runs from them, the Voltron Force chases after her, she unleashes a Robeast Clawbeast, runs and hides in her flying coffin, and gets away from them after they're distracted by and then defeat the Clawbeast, to the ones where Zarkon, Haggar, and the other villains get rid of Yurak and trick the Voltron Force into thinking that Sven died. There are also a lot of special features, such as interviews/coments by the creators of and the animators of the show about their favorite characters and their favorite episodes, etc., and a few other special features, too. I love this boxset and I own it! They don't have as much of the fantastic cartoons that they used to have on TV like this, "Thundercats", "DragonBall Z", "Pokemon", "Digimon", and the many others that they had as reruns in the '90's and new shows then, too! This is a fantastic cartoon and I love and have all of the five boxsets of it!
Summary of Voltron - Defender of the Universe - Collection Two
The evil Prince Lotor of Planet Doom has come to destroy Planet Arus and take Princess Allura to be his slave. The Voltron Force, Keith, Lance, Pidge and Hunk pilot the Black, Red, Green and Yellow Lions to defend the peacful planet. With Princess Allura in the Blue Lion, they form Voltron and destroy Lotor's robeasts. Frusturated, Lotor targets Planet Pollux, and Allura's cousin Romelle. Can Voltron defend two entire planets at once? And what will happen to the Voltron Force after a poisoned blade leads to Princess Allura's funeral?Like Robotech, Voltron is a cut-and-paste combination of unrelated series created for American TV. Part of the early wave of "Japanimation" that helped to build an audience for anime in the U.S., Voltron also contributed to the fad for transforming robot toys. The episodes inCollection Three, the "Green Lion" set, originally aired in October and November of 1984. Four young stalwarts from the Galaxy Alliance, Keith, Lance, Hunk, and Pidge, pilot the lion-mecha that link to form the giant robot Voltron; Princess Allura of the planet Arus took over the fifth lion after Sven was wounded in battle. After being missing in action for some time, Sven (who talks like Wally Walrus) reappears in episode 41, but stays on planet Pollux with Princess Romelle as an ally of the Voltron Force. In each episode, Lotor, the son of King Zarkon, and the evil witch Haggar concoct a new scheme to destroy Voltron and seize control of Arus--only to be defeated by Voltron between the last commercial and the closing theme song. Comprised of re-edited footage from Hyakujuo Go-Lion ("Hundred-Beast King Go-Lion") and Kikou Kantai Dairugger XV ("Armored Fleet Dairugger XV"), the episodes have obviously been assembled like mosaics, with extensive dialogue covering the gaps in the visuals. Like Robotech, Voltron has a special place in the hearts of adults who watched it as kids. For younger otaku, it's an example of how far Japanese animation has developed in the intervening years--and how much more sophisticated its audience has become. (Rated 7 and older: violence)
