Movie Reviews of Visual Bible - Acts

Movie Review: Good Bible movie
Summary: 4 Stars

This movie was great in that it is a word-for-word account of the book of Acts using the NIV for the translation. The main actors had great speaking voices (which took a little to get used to). Luke, the author of Acts, does a great job of narrating at times with zeal. The only major fault was some variation in the acting in opposition to what the text says (for example, Acts 8:38-39 they don't enter or leave the water). Overall, it was a good film and inspiring to see so many powerful scenes from God's word visually acted out.

Movie Review: Visual Bible-Acts
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a good resource for teaching the Bible especially to kids that are visual learners. They retain much more with this video and it is the NIV scripture, nothing added, nothing taken away.

Movie Review: Very interesting...
Summary: 4 Stars

I always enjoy having a visual experience go along with hearing and reading the Bible, and this is no different. I'd definitely check this out, if you have the time.

Movie Review: Great idea; bad acting
Summary: 3 Stars

The script for this dramatization of the book of Acts is simply the biblical text (New International Version), word for word. Chapter and verse numbers are displayed in the bottom corner of the screen, and the DVD menus allow you to skip easily to specific chapters or events. This is a great idea, but alas, the acting is mostly terrible. (Dean Jones is okay as Luke, and Francesco Quinn is good in his small role as Stephen.) Most strikingly, the actors were obviously instructed that the Christian disciples would be full of joy, which is fine, but this "joy" is portrayed with incessant cheerfulness and a lot of smiling and giggling.

I've used excerpts of this video in teaching college and high school religion courses--specifically, the sections on Pentecost and on Paul's conversion. I make sure to tell the students that it's okay if they giggle at the scene of Jesus' ascension, which is depicted quite literally. I'm shopping around for a new video to use in teaching Acts.

Incidentally, the movie "The Gospel of John," which is now being marketed as part of the "Visual Bible" series, has nothing else in common with the "Acts" video and is quite good.

Movie Review: Limited but useful
Summary: 3 Stars

Here's the entire book of ACTS, limited by a budget that is very, very small for a project of immense scope. Luke narrates parts; this avoids a few problems. It's handy to be able to access the story by chapters. It may not be good cinema but it's much better than nothing, and it provides some authentic Mediterranean atmosphere. It should be most appreciated in a family circle or Sunday School where people are tolerant of amateurish productions.
