Barely acceptable addition to this series with a distorted sense of geography. Several highlights ignored. Some pretty pictures, however. Select instead "Over Ireland" which is a five-star tour with excellent music and narration.

Visions of Ireland wastes no time with interviews or anything but glancing anecdotes about history; this is the pure eroticization of landscape, be it rural or urban. A camera suspended from a helicopter provides a serene, gliding bird's-eye view of rolling green hills, majestic brusk cliffs, proud stone towers, stirring cathedrals, and picturesque ruins. As this lush scenery rolls past, a woman's musical Irish lilt tells tales of St. Patrick, legendary giants, kings, monks, and of course the Blarney Stone, all backed with Irish jigs and Celtic strings. It's shameless self-promotion, and anyone who watches will feel an overwhelming urge to run to the computer and buy tickets for the next flight to the Emerald Isle. From the forbidding, isolated Skellig Islands to the bustling cities of Belfast and Dublin, Ireland looks entrancing. The main program is roughly an hour, but there's around 18 minutes of additional footage that is every bit as luscious and verdant, including some idyllic shots of sheep jumping over a low stone wall. --Bret Fetzer
