Movie Reviews of Versus (Director's Cut)Movie Review: Not bad Summary: 3 Stars
I have read alot of reviews about this movie and decided to give it a chance. I picked it up for $15 from a stand in a mall along with Junk ( which i havent watched yet but will watch tonight ). the version I picked up is the extended version , which was extended for a good 30 minutes to much. Now, Japanesse movies are wierd there dialogue is wierd and some what cheezy but, this movie was not bad though the action was good the gore was very good the zombies were good, the plot was good even the acting was good. The ending, when i think it should have ended didnt it dragged and dragged which makes this movie seem alot worse then it is. If this movie was only 90 minutes its no problem and i would have no problem watching it again from time to time. But, this extended ending just really killed the whole movie. I would advise anyone to rent b4 you buy because japanese movies are way different than American movies dialogue is one thing along with just the style of movie that it is. Im not a big fan of asian cinema and find my self when i watch any type of asian cinema to always be 50/50 on it which is why im shocked i brought this and JUnk, but i am a big fan of Zombie movies so thats really why. Overall the movie was not bad it gets 3 stars and had some extra money to spend so buy these 2 movies was worth it to me. i will watch junk tonight and rate it afterwards.
Movie Review: Sometimes Amazon's Recommendations Are Way Off Summary: 3 Stars
Damn you, Amazon, for recommending this movie to me.I thought I told you I hate Zombie flicks, when I went and bought Resident Evil per your recommendation, I guess it was because of Milla Jovovich (whom I liked in Fifth Element, The Messenger, Dazed and Confused, and even Chaplin). Because after I watched Evil, I immediately tried to sell it here, and with no takers the DVD gathers dust under my TV stand, where it was chucked. So after strenuous hours tweaking my recommendations, you suggest this one... I did enjoy watching it, I laughed, and I was even grossed out a couple of times. Seeing Zombies use guns and swords was pretty funny. Otherwise, VERSUS reminded me so much of Evil Dead and was comparable to all other movies in that genre. There is some interesting film-making in Versus, and Japanese cinema usually does interest me, making me give this movie three stars... Yeah I know it's a bad review, but I had to say something. Anyone wanna buy my Versus Director's Cut? b.
Movie Review: Looks Awful, Good Story Summary: 3 Stars
A more accurate title for this film would have been "The Blair Matrix Project." It really brings up some serious issues and makes you think..."Could I have made this movie in my backyard with some friends when I was in highschool?" That being said if you can sit through the almost endless (and sometimes pointless) encounters of the main characters and make it to the final scene the movie becomes quite interesting.
Movie Review: Potentially cool - But ultimately disappointing Summary: 2 Stars
Although the concept of a Zombie/Kung-Fu/Martial Arts/Shoot-em-up movie sounds freakin' awesome on paper, there were several things that held this movie back. For starters, the version I rented didn't have subtitles, and the casting of the American voice actors was HORRIBLE! Totally didn't match up with the looks of the characters, which made it hard to get into it. Although the movie picks up pace near the end, the beginning is painfully slow. Also, since the ENITRE movie is shot in the same forest, the scenery and setting are VERY monotonous - VERY repetitive. In terms of the story, many characters were introduced with vague if any introduction, and it was difficult to figure out who/what they were. On the plus side, some of the action scenes were cool and shot with interesting angles. Some nice camera work and unexpected wire worked helped out. However, in the end, I was ultimately dissapointed by the pace of the movie. If you're more into the low-budget comic Evil Dead sort of flick, this might be for you. But if you're lookng for an Ultra-Violent Japanese movie, check out Ichii the Killer instead.
Movie Review: Atrocious Summary: 1 Stars
I'm beginning to wonder if people feel that they're going to look stupid if they say a foreign film is bad. That is the only possible explanation I can think of as to why Versus could have an IMDb average over three. I really can't fathom how any true film-lover could actually find anything of value in this dung-heap. Versus is proof that not all foreign movies are amazing. Furthermore, Versus is proof that foreign movies can occasionally the most wretched tripe ever committed to celluloid.
By the way, I am not going to refer to this atrocity as a "film" at any point in this review - it doesn't deserve to be dignified with that. I'm relegating this one to "movie", a term I normally try to avoid.
Anyway, this Japanese mangling has a ridiculously convoluted plot involving zombies and Samurai reincarnated as criminals. There's also some subplot about some girl's blood resurrecting something-or-other...it's all just a big mess that I don't really care to remember. Now you're probably wondering how a movie about Samurai, criminals, and zombies can be so terrible. I had a hard time believing it too, but there is no subject matter immune to incompetent filmmakers. Versus feels like the bastard spawn of a group of ADD-ridden fifteen-year-olds who do nothing but play videogames and down can after can of Mountain Dew, all while listening to techno music. We have a group of overly stylized (not to mention extremely clichéd) characters that wear sunglasses and a lot of leather. We have martial arts fight scene after drawn-out martial arts fight scene. We have a lot of pointless violence. We have a lot of slow-motion shots trying to mimic The Matrix. We have a lot of over-the-top gore. Yes, not even the high gore factor could save this pile of crap.
All the hyper-slo-mo-Matrix-kung-fu shots really just began to give me a bad headache after about, oh, ten minutes. And if it wasn't bad enough to get through already, the movie is actually 119 minutes long. That's about 119 minutes longer than it should be.
Hell, if you think Uwe Boll movies are bad, you ain't seen nothin' yet. It's been a while since I've seen a movie this bad. In fact, this is quite possibly the single most god-awful movie I've ever seen. The absolute only reason I sat through the entire train-wreck was because I don't believe in rating a film if one has not viewed it in its entirety - and I just could not pass up giving this piece of garbage the grade it deserves. That, obviously, is a huge, resounding F.
