Movie Reviews of Vera Cruz

Movie Review: Killer Smile
Summary: 5 Stars

Talk about a dichotomy! You have the flamboyant scoundrel Burt Lancaster on one side and the stoic gentleman Gary Cooper on the other. They form a loose allegiance and friendship in French occupied Mexico. And that's the main focus of this film. This movie is just filled with so many cornball theatrics that you just can't help but fall in love with it. And there's a twist or a turn around every corner. That's what makes it so good. Director Robert Aldrich mixes lessons on etiquette with lessons on sharp shooting. Even Emperor Maximilian gets to show off his marksmanship prowess against Cooper and Lancaster in a very entertaining scene! There's enough action, witty dialogue and beautiful location photography (by Ernest Laszlo) to please most movie fans. The large cast includes Cesar Romero, Denise Darcel, George Macready, Ernest Borgnine, Charles Bronson and Jack Elam. The film's greatest asset is Burt Lancaster's smile. I never knew he had so many teeth!

Movie Review: Viva La Vera Cruz!
Summary: 5 Stars

Vera Cruz is one of those Westerns that you can sit and enjoy over and over again. The teaming of Gary Cooper and Burt Lancaster, two great Western movie stars, was inspired, and was a great contrast as Lancaster was rising to his prime, and Cooper was in the sunset of his illustrious career.

Cooper and Lancaster play two soldiers of fortune who sign up to transport gold in Mexico for the Emperor Maximilian on a route straight through rebel territory. They end up stealing the gold for themselves, but Cooper is conflicted because he has fallen for a female rebel who is urging him to turn the gold over to the rebels. Eventually, double crosses and greed lead to a showdown between Cooper and Lancaster.

Great direction by Robert Aldrich, great lead performances, and a great story lead to movie magic. Vera Cruz has all of the ingredients of a Western classic.

Movie Review: "I'm A Pig"
Summary: 5 Stars

Everyone wants the gold and the journey is full of double crosses as Lancaster and Cooper's characters travel through most of the film. I love Joe's(Lancaster)smile and antics as he declares "I'm a pig" and shows us he is out to get it all. His great gun play is fun to watch. The quick draw behind his back and cocky "anyone else stringing with Charlie" line is a classic.
Ben (Cooper) is a dignified southern gentleman treating people with respect. A perfect play on Lancaster's character.
A much overlooked movie that is worthy of a second look and belongs in any western collection.

Movie Review: Vera Cruz
Summary: 5 Stars

A great movie/western. Gary Cooper is great as always but I have to say this movie had to have been written for Burt Lancaster. It's the first time I can say he fit his part to a tee and did a really good job at acting. They made a great pairing of the two for this movie. A total enjoyment and a "must add" to your movie collection.
