Movie Reviews of Varsity BluesMovie Review: I enjoyed it, but its an aquired taste Summary: 4 Stars
Okay, let's get down to the line. I hate Dawsons Creek, and I've never watched a football game for more then two seconds while flipping through channels. However, my girlfriend dragged me to this movie, telling me that I would like it. So I went in knowing that it would be stupid. But once the movie was going for a while, I have to admit, I enjoyed it. The acting wasn't great, and some of the accents were off, but it was all good enough to watch. It had a few good themes running through it, along with some great camera work, and a few small twists to move the story along better. So yes, it was a good flick in my mind. However, not everybody is going to like it. You really do have to adjust yourself for its style and if you can't, watch something else.
Movie Review: "Good Moooning, Good Mooning, Good Mooning" Summary: 4 Stars
The movie is based on a "piece" of everyone's life, in some small way, who have ever played football. Does it matter that HS kids get in a strip club and drink till 6:00am ? "NO" Does it matter that Hoss is sitting on a tailgate, drinking Jack like its water ... and shooting a shotgun, with the HS Football Field lights on ? "NOOOOO" !!!!
It is "Rocky" + "Friday Night Lights" + "Rudy" + "Stand By Me" = Varisty Blues.
If you played football, or ever hung out with the guys after a game, or ever LAUGHED at the guys who couldn't leave HS even after they graduated 9 years ago ... Then buy the movie, its worth it, and the soundtrack ROCKS !!!!
Movie Review: Don't tell my friends you saw me rate this movie! Summary: 4 Stars
I secretly rate this in my top twenty movies. I'm too old too fall in love with the Dawson's Creek boy, so no, I don't like it because of him. Sure, it's a bit of your typical sports movie, but it's a bit off edge as well. It's funny as hell. The characters are completely amusing and the southern hick accents top the charts. I may live in Nebraska, but I am not a football fan at all, yet this football movie is great for any movie fan. Believe me, you'll smile a lot, laugh a ton and sometimes wonder just what is going on. Enough, I better get off before someone I know sees me writing this good review about a movie most critics didn't like.
Movie Review: "Let's Be Heroes" Summary: 4 Stars
The '99 film `Varsity Blues' is definitely one of the best high school coming of age-teen angst-sports films within the genre. There are plenty of good ole boy hysteronics and football action to keep the male audience focused, a couple of pretty girls and of course James Van Der Beek and Paul Walker to keep the girls involved. The two keys to this film that set it above other films of this nature is the performance of Jon Voight as the thoroughly unlikable Coach Bud Kilmer and Ron Lester as the big, soft-hearted lineman Billy Bob. If you're looking for something enjoyable and undemanding you could do a lot worse.
Movie Review: Great Football Movie Summary: 4 Stars
When I first saw "Varsity Blues", I was really hard in judging it. I've grown up around football all my life and now I am a varsity coach, so I can be a harsh judge of all things football.I can admit now after seeing it a few times that it is a fun, exciting, and realistic portrayal of what some towns are like for football. The young actors are very good, the action scenes are second only to "The Program" and the comedy is very reminiscent of "American Pie" style teen humor. If you just want to rent a fun and enjoyable flick, this is a good bet.
