Movie Reviews of Vanity FairMovie Review: Hideous! Summary: 1 Stars
Vanity Fair is one of my all-time favorite novels, but while the book's wry social satire is perfectly crafted and executed, the translation to film was difficult to watch. I did so to its conclusion, but only because I had paid good money for the set, and guilt alone made me stick it out. Never before has such garish ugliness been presented so relentlessly. Though the acting throughout is tolerable, I found the casting to be lackluster at best. Many of the characters are monstrously presented, and with the exception of Becky Sharp, who is delightfully played by a beautiful young actress named Natasha Little, in my opinion the whole thing would have done well to be recast. Making matters worse is the hideous musical score, which seems to consist mostly of accordian or some other screechingly jarring instrument, played in an unnecessarily over-the-top, satirical style that jolted me from the story each time I heard it, and, sadly, I heard it alot. This is not a well-depicted telling, and I caution everyone not to waste their hard earned dollars. I am completely stunned that people actually gave 5 stars to this awful rendering of a masterful work of literature. The fact that it is a faithful adaptation of the story is completely obscured by the deliberately circus-style uglification employed to emphasize the bawdy qualities of the tale and many of its characters. That's how bad the production and direction are. They ruined a fabulous opportunity to bring a great book to life. Do not make the same mistake I did in trusting the recommendations of earlier reviewers. Sometimes we just need to stick with the book, and this is definitely one of those occasions!
Movie Review: Cirque du Soleil meets A Clockwork Orange Summary: 1 Stars
It's beyond me why anyone would rate this disgusting piece of tripe w/five stars. It doesn't even rate one star in my opinion. The acting is admirable but there are things in the miniseries itself which are not, such as showing a woman picking her nose and rolling around the contents between her fingers in the opening scene, an obsession w/slobbering buck teeth on a couple of the men, one of whom literally sucks face w/his new daughter-in-law, freakish makeup on everyone including Becky and that music! my God, that music! If I never hear a trumpet again, it'll be too soon. I actually muted the TV and read the closed captioning so that I could power through to the end. I'm going to start reading the one star reviews first from now on. Had I done so w/this "messterpiece", I could've saved myself a lot of aggravation, nausea and money.
Movie Review: Terrible version Summary: 1 Stars
What can I say? Being a great fan of BBC and A&E period dramas, after buying Vanity Fair, I was truly dissapointed. I don't know who was in charge of the casting, but I think it was all the out of work actors thrown together and an ugly bunch you couldn't relate to. The music score was totally innapropiate. I found it to be more of a second rate B movie and would highly recommend that nobody purchase this disastrous production. But on the BBC's behalf I have to recommend as a must for your collection Berkley Square, The Mayor of Casterbridge, Wives & Daughters and Tess of D'Urbervilles. Now these are first class movies, brilliantly cast and excellent performances.
Movie Review: Don't bother with it Summary: 1 Stars
I'm so dissapointed at this period movie, it was badly cast, terrible music choice, and boring. Also it felt so disjointed from start to end. I truly purchased it cause the review says "Adapted for the screen by Andrew Davies, who did the honors for the phenomenally successful Pride and Prejudice" however it does not compare at all with the quality of Pride and Prejudice. It was so boring and disgusting, you are better off without watching it, you wouldn't miss a thing. DO NOT BOTHER BUYING IT.
Movie Review: Depressing to no end Summary: 1 Stars
I have never read this book, but bought it based on other movies I enjoyed that BBC has done. If you like Charles Dickens, you might enjoy this, but if you are looking for anything lighthearted or romantic you will be disappointed. Nothing like Pride and Prejudice or Wives and Daughters which I enjoyed very much. Although I am sure that this is a literary masterpiece, it is depressing (as many literary masterpieces are). This is not an all around bad movie, just a bad match for me.
