Movie Reviews of Vanity Fair (Widescreen)Movie Review: They almost had it Summary: 4 Stars
First, let me say that in my opinion it is an excellent film. A great story, great acting: after all anything with Reese Witherspoon in it is worth watching, not to mention a list of amazing actors that fill the screen. Amazing costumes and cinematography. The only downside of this film is that it lacks that extra kick to make this 2hr and 15 min film fully enjoyable. Which is ironic actually, because if you watch an A&E version (which is 5hsr long) film becomes more complete, story lines are more complex and without all of that film just did not work.
With all of that said I still think it was a pretty good film.
Movie Review: A very well done classic Summary: 4 Stars
I've actually seen this redone three times.
This version is the least painful of the lot,
if still not the most faithful to the classic novel.
Becky Sharp is not out of Jane Austin or Dickens, but she
certain represents a time and place in 19th century literature.
In this movie she is treated more kindly than in most
and with more understanding of humanity.
Vanity Fair is a bridge between French novels and English
with a very bitter irony and satire of the manners and culture of that time.
What we love to hate is the greatness of the writing.
Movie Review: I really enjoyed this film Summary: 4 Stars
I know that a lot of people were confused by this movie or didn't enjoy it but I did. Reese Witherspoon was terrific in this, like another viewer suggested, she was born to play this role. Gabriel Byrne was good too as the Marquess of Steyne. I also liked the spinster sister of Sir Pitt, she was hilarious!
I love the Regency time period in books and movies so I had to see this and I am glad that I went to see it.
Movie Review: doesn't this remind you of another feisty girl from Tara Summary: 4 Stars
Whilst watching the movie, I can't help comparing the two novels. Girl left to fend for self, girl makes good, stumbles a bit, girl vows to find happiness again. I'm sure Margaret Mitchell have read the Thackarey book before writing her magnum opus... hmmm. Overall a great movie excellently executed, from one of our generation's best directors. Watch this movie it won't be a waste of time!
Movie Review: a nicer becky sharp Summary: 4 Stars
Reese Witherspoon did a wonderful job and for the most part this adaptation follows the book, however I found her portrayal to be a lot less manipulative and selfish than the Becky Sharp in the book. I still recommend this and think actor James Purefoy should become a huge star soon as well as the actress playing Amelia.
