Movie Reviews of Valley GirlMovie Review: Valley Girl Rocks! Summary: 5 Stars
VALLEY GIRL is a neat comedy drama of a movie about a girl in the valley in L.A. County who falls head over heels for an outsider(Nicholas Cage) who is not from the valley and is like the complete opposite from Julie(Deborah Foreman) who nobody approves of, but Randy (Nicholas Cage) & Julie(Deborah Foreman)still make a great & cute couple, which proves to be the case when Julie decides to dump Randy later and reconciles with her ex-boyfriend Tommy(Mike Bowen)after Julie ends up giving into peer pressure from her friends.
VALLEY GIRL also had numerous popular hit songs from the 1980's in it too like "I Melt With You" by Modern English; "Electric Avenue" by Eddie Grant; "Don't Put Another Dime In The Jukebox" by The Flirts, "Who Can It Be Now" by Men-At-Work; "Girls Like Me" by Bonnie Hayes, etc.
As a matter of fact, VALLEY GIRL was the movie that made Nick Cage famous & launched his acting career.
VALLEY GIRL also has an intriguing nude scene when Suzi's boyfriend(Skip) walks in the house and into Suzi's bathroom upstairs seeing Suzi in the shower in full-frontal nudity showing us Michelle Meyrick's cunt, tits & bare-ass playing the song "Eaten By The Monster Of Love" by Sparks just before Suzy's mother Beth Brent(Lee Purcell)gets home & barges into Suzi's bedroom catching Skip(Dave Ensor) & Suzi(Michelle Meyrick) in bed making love, but what I found kind of strange in this movie was Skip & Beth seemed to have been paying more attention to each other than Skip had been paying attention to Suzi, especially since Beth was obviously falling for Skip even though Beth was obviously way too old for Skip, but probably wanted to be nailed by Skip.
Additionally, I found it kind of odd why Julie's mother Sarah(Colleen Camp) never figured out that Julie's father Steve(Frederick Forest) was a doper, especially since Sarah noticed at least several times that Steve was disorganized & distracted.
I also couldn't understand why Julie's girlfriends were so insisitent about wanting Julie to get back together with Tommy, since Julie's girlfriends all thought Randy was a fox, but then all of the sudden Julie's friends change their mind about Randy being compatible for Julie when Julie starts spending most of her time with Randy after getting over her break-up with Tommy, but I suspect that Julie's friends reason for being so persistent about wanting Julie to reconcile with Tommy was probably due to the fact that they were probably getting jealous of Julie and Randy's relationship, since Julie stopped spending so much time with her friends when she started dating Randy along with the fact that Randy wasn't even from their high school or the valley, unlike Tommy, Julie, and her girlfriends, not to mention that Julie was obviously not even attracted to Tommy, especially whenever Tommy tried to make a pass at her, plus I can't see how Julie's friends could even stand Tommy for that matter either, especially since Tommy had tried getting into Loryn's(Liz Daily's) pants after Julie dumped him.
Fortunately, VALLEY GIRL has a happy ending to it when Julie decides to reconcile with Randy at the prom when Randy kicks Tommy's ass at the end of the movie just before Julie & Randy take off with the chauffer.
This movie also takes me all the way back to memory lane to the days when I was living in the Imperial Valley since I was living in my hometown(El Centro, CA)at the time, which was another reason why I used to get so fascinated watching various scenes of this movie that took place in the L.A. Area since it was the total opposite from where I come from since the whole Imperial Valley is just a small ugly secluded community in the Desert Southwest with basically nothing to do for fun or entertainment, unlike the L.A. Area.
Movie Review: Valley Girl Summary: 5 Stars
Valley Girl should be released on dvd if only because it's the first starring role for Nicolas Cage. On top of that fact, this is a classic Romeo & Juliet re-made in 1983 style updated with the music, hairstyles, clothes, slang talk, dancing, etc. The romantic drama is also a comedy. It's a love story set amidst rich teenagers who live to shop at the mall, put makeup on, eat junk food & party & the poor streetwise punkers who live to hang out in the bars listening to punk music with spiked multi-colored dyed hair. The two main characters meet, are attracted yet they are not socially allowed to be together because one is a valley person & the other is a punker who is more into the real way of living- not the superficial life of doing & saying & looking the way & how peers & people expect to just fit in- there's a social message that everyone of every age should adhere to ! Julie ( Deborah Foreman ) isn't supposed to date Randy ( Nicolas Cage ) as he is not from the Valley. She is supposed to date the most popular guy in school ( Micheal Bowen of "Jackie Brown" )- not because she likes him- but because he is the most popular guy in school ( he's a total jerk but he dresses & looks cool & eats all her food & is shallow & even cheats on Julie with her best friend-oh ! ) & all the girls want him -except Julie ! Julie & Randy secretly meet regularly to kiss & make out in the back seat, they laugh & talk & fall in love so happily like most first loves- it is simple & deep & easy & exciting ! Julie's parents are played as hippies ( Frederic Forrest & Colleen Camp ) who run a health food store, smoke pot & don't put limitations on Julie's behavior- they say that punishment is "bad karma" when Julie stays out all night. This isn't just for young people re-discovering the 1980's- this is for people who are still young and lived in the 1980's as teenagers ! For whatever bad decision they chose not to use the main actress on the cover ( who knows why ? ! ) but Nicolas Cage is on the cover picture standing next to a generic typical blonde advertising a typical teen goofball comedy when this actually has substance to it- a Love Story & social message & has great music all the way through it- mainly the group "The Plimsouls" songs: " A Million miles away"," The Oldest Story in the World" etc. not only are beautiful songs with intelligent romantic lyrics but they also pertain to the story & are very deep & quite touching. This movie is also lighthearted silly fun fun,too ! Why this is not avilable on dvd or available more easily & at a lower price is beyond question as so many people enjoy this movie. Some of the actors went on to be in other movies. THe director Amy Heckerling went on to direct CLUELESS which most people have heard of. Nicolas Cage went on to win an Academy Award. Deborah Foreman starred in a few movies & made a few appearances in other movies but apparently Hollywood just doesn't know what to do with a pretty yet unusual quirky personality so her career didn't go too far after the 1980's which is a waste as Deborah Foreman is not only pretty but Excellent as the Valley Girl with whom young handsome Nicolas Cage is "totally in love with like fer sure dude !". Hollywood- put it on dvd please ! It will sell fer sure - like totally !
Movie Review: A Classic 80's Movie Summary: 5 Stars
Nicholas Cage and Deborah Foreman star in this great movie from the 80's about a girl from the Valley and a guy from Hollywood. Foreman stars as Julie, a valley girl who, along with her boyfriend Tommy (Michael Bowen) are the most popular couple at Valley High. However, Julie is getting bored with Tommy because she thinks he's ignoring her. So, she breaks up with him (on a mall escalator, no less). After the break-up, Julie and her friends Samantha (Tina Theberge), Loryn (Elizabeth Daily), and Suzie (Michelle Meyrink) head to the beach. It is here that Julie gets her first glimpse of Randy (Cage).
Unfortunately for Julie, she and her now ex-boyfriend Tommy are both supposed to go to a party at Suzie's house. Randy's friend Fred overhears the plans for the party, and he and Randy plan to crash the party. Sure enough, Fred and Randy show up uninvited at Suzie's house, but Julie is immediately intrigued by Randy. The two start talking, but Tommy and his thug friends interfere and throw Randy out of the house. Now very mad, Randy and Fred go back to the party. Randy waits in the bathroom for Julie to come in, and the two decide to leave together. Julie convinces Samantha to come along.
Randy takes Julie "over the hill' to Hollywood and shows her some of his favorite places to hang out. The sparks soon begin to fly between Randy and Julie, and they start going steady, much to the disgust of Julie's friends. Their relationship goes along very well for a while, but one night at a sleepover, Julie's friends tell her that she must make a choice between them and Randy. They convince her to get back together with Tommy and dump Randy. Julie goes along with it, and starts to be very mean to Randy, but does she really feel that way, or is she just covering up her true feelings for the sake of her friends? Will Julie and Randy get back together, or will Julie do what her friends want her to?
This is a great movie. I've seen it several times on VHS, and I was thrilled to find it on DVD. Nicholas Cage and Deborah Foreman are great in their roles as Julie and Randy. The supporting actors are very good as well. This movie was released when I was in high school, so it brings back a lot of memories for me. The great 80s music played throughout the movie is a huge plus, too.
I give this movie my highest recommendation. The story is excellent, and the acting is very good. Take a trip back to the 80s with this great movie. "Its awesome".
Movie Review: Finally it's here! Summary: 5 Stars
I had this movie on vhs for years and must have watched it a million times as it's just that kind of film I like to watch over and over and never get tired of. Then, the day after my birthday last summer, it came out on dvd. It seemed like perfect timing..I thought for sure I'd get it as a gift. I didn't. I did get a late Christmas present from my husband a few days ago, and this was it. It is the most romantic gift he gave me next to the sparkly diamond stud earrings. I think this movie belongs in the class. Why? Well, first off, I am 34 yrs old, which make this movie one of many of my generation. It brings me back to those glory days of 1980's high school. "Valley Girl" is a romantic comedy/drama, that has so much heart and such a clear and simple message of it's what inside that counts. Frederick Forrest, who plays the father to Julie, who is played by Deborah Foreman, and is Valley Girl extradionare, delivers some of the best lines of the movie in the scene where he talks to her about what really matters in life. This is a very 80's version of Romeo & Juliet instead it's Randy & Julie. Randy, who is played by a very young Nicholas Cage, is the punker dude type that Julie falls in love with. Their's is a typical teenage romance with phony friends and a jilted ex boyfriend trying to tear it all to pieces. "Valley Girl" has a bittersweet quality to it. I always cry when I watch it, and my heart swells up like a balloon. It sounds corny, but it's true. I still adore it after all these years. The dvd had some good extras, I'm still checking some out, can't comment on all of them. One really good bit of trivia I learned is that Michael Bowen, who played Tommy, the Valley dude boyfriend of Julie, has appeared in a few Quention Tarentino films. It seems QT is a fan of this small, indy film..Gee, I wonder why? It's totally cool to know that now. I am only sad that Deb Foreman is not among the stars that came back after 20 years to be interviewed for this special edition disc.I highly recommend this to fans of 80's films, or even just films about the 80's, or fans of love stories...Oh to heck with it, all movie fans will find something to appreciate in the movie "Valley Girl". My husband did. Eileen F.
Movie Review: Outstanding 80's youth movie! Summary: 5 Stars
It really seems to be a trend to look back on past decades and ridicule just about everything that has "come before". It makes me laugh that people are so smug to think that the "present" is perfect. Well, I have news for you. The present is far from perfect and there's a whole lot about the past that was MUCH better than it is today. The movie "Valley Girl" is a wonderful example of how COOL the early 80's were!
I won't offer a review of the film itself, because that's already been done by much better reviewers than myself. I will simply say that this is a great youth movie from a very positive time in America. It's always great to be young... but it was TOTALLY AWESOME to be young in the early 80's!
The DVD features a great transfer with a few nifty "extras" (80's trivia track and audio commentary by director Martha Coolidge). As noted by a few other reviewers, a few of the songs have been removed from the film (and this is not noted anywhere on the DVD package). Also, for some reason the sound was remixed and some of the music has been placed in the "background" when it was originally quite loud and "up front". Since the music is such an integral part of this film it's a shame that it has been altered in any way.
Remember:
If you should ever find yourself making fun of 80's fashions or haircuts just put Valley Girl in your DVD player so that you can be reminded of how FUN and COOL that time really was. Those who truly understand what the 80's were all about make no apologies and have no regrets. The 80's were a TOTAL blast, and Valley Girl is a wonderful testament to that fact!
