Movie Review: A Good DVD but VNV's Energy Is Hard to Translate Summary: 4 Stars
To some extent I have to agree with both the supporters and critics of this DVD. The main point should be that VNV is one of the world's premier electronic bands, their music is grand and forceful, and they give excellent, energetic performances. The DVD has the ability to show elements of what makes their shows so good, but fails to fully translate the energy and mystery of actually being there. To me this DVD, despite meticulous editing and wonderful sound quality, is better at highlighting the flaws or what's missing from a VNV show than it is at showing what's great about them. When you are actually there, the power of the music, the majesty of the video accents and passion of Ronan flow directly to you. I have to violently disagree with our friend in SF who claims that VNV is better seen than heard. Their shows are great but this DVD can't capture that magic... had he ever gone to a show he would know that. That is the conclusion that one can draw... not that they are poor live.Having said all of that, I still am glad that I own the DVD. The interviews and extra footage were interesting even though it's not as insightful as you'd hope from artists with such a painstakingly creative vision. To be honest, I find the Apoptygma Berzerk DVD better although I slightly prefer the music of VNV.
Movie Review: almost but not quite. Summary: 4 Stars
This DVD includes several songs filmed at three locations. If you've already seen VNV in concert then this dvd will do little more than refresh your memory. If however you've never seen them in concert it will give you a pretty good idea of what to expect. Overall If you already have live mp3's of vnv, or you've been to a concert you've probably already heard these versions so it won't be anything new. I own quite a few concert DVD's from various bands from Tori Amos to Rammstein and this is far from the best one I own.
The sound quality of this DVD is excellent, the editing is average and cuts seem to be frequent and pointless. The dvd fails to capture the full energy you'd actually feel at a live concert, and only partially captures the performance of the band.
If you're a fan of VNV then this is probably worth the investment, unless they happen to be coming to your area in concert.
Movie Review: almostperfect Summary: 4 Stars
Not a horrible job editing the two shows together, but it could have been better. I am a huge VNV Nation fan, and being able to have the concert experience in my own home is something I truly treasure. Excellent DVD.
Movie Review: Haven't seem it, but Ronan told me... Summary: 3 Stars
I was lucky enough to make it to the DVD release party in TO last year. The boys told the sad tale of serious screw ups in recording this thing, expecially the synch between audio & vid. Hence the inter-cutting of seemingly random imgaes...they didn't have any way to synch the eye with the ear. I haven't actually seen the DVD since that night, so I can't comment on it; just wanted to share that little pearl.
BTW - if anyone knows who the DJ was that opened for them that night, PLEASE send me any info on him. All due repsect to VNV, that guy was the highlight of the evening!
