Movie Reviews of V for Vendetta (Two-Disc Special Edition)Movie Review: Best Movie Ever Summary: 5 StarsWith as much publicity as this film had received, and having read the graphic novel by Alan Moore, I had high hopes for this flick. I was afraid that it would flat-out suck. How wrong I was.
This film takes the masterpiece of the graphic novel to a whole new level. With the help of the Wachowskis (responsible for the Matrix trilogy) and producer Joel Silver (also from the Matrix trilogy), leads Hugo Weaving (V), Natalie Portman (Evey Hammond), and John Hurt (Adam Sutler) do an amazing job portraying a world in which individuality is frowned upon. Conformity and dedication to the government is the name of the game here.
By now, we've all heard the basic idea as to what this story is about. V, who appears to be the villain, is really the superhero. His ambition is to make as many people as possible stop being drones and start thinking for themselves. He wants to cause a revolt against humdrum society and the government. Along the way, circumstances cause him to take in Evey. Under V's wing, Evey comes to astounding realizations about herself and the way the world she's been living in works.
There were several amazing quotes in the graphic novel during the scene in which Evey makes her profound tranformation. I was disappointed that these quotes were not in the movie, as they truly were flat-out wonderful, but no matter.
The action sequences are masterfully carried out, as are the explosions. John Hurt does a more than believable job as a Hitler-esque leader, angrily addressing England's people, scaring them into following blindly.
Of course, anything Hugo Weaving does is bound to be amazing, and this is no exception. With no facial expressions, he conveys raw emotions by body language and voice alone, and he does so perfectly. He makes us feel towards V exactly what we should feel - a respect, an allegiance, and an understanding. This is one "bad guy" we want on our team...someone charismatic, with pure ambition, determination, and belief that what he's doing is really for the better of all people.
Natalie Portman does a fine job as Evey, transforming from a meek follower who doesn't understand V's plans to a tough, rugged individual who comes to see the light of V's truths.
This film must not be missed. Many of the film's underlying messages of overthrowing the government, anarchy, and breaking bounds of conformity may go over some moviegoers head. However, for those fed up with the way our world is run...for those of us sick to death of living in a society in which dedication and love of our government leaders is considered right and true...this is a film to portray our hearts' deepest ambitions.
The film's final scene, which is different from that of the graphic novel, is absolutely, positively fantastic. We see exactly how big of an impact V has made in the lives of the people. Countless followers of his unite to share his dreams of a free world without restraints and laws. It's an awe-inspiring scene to behold, moving in a way that very nearly brought this reviewer to tears.
In short, do not by any means pass up the opportunity to see this film. Don't go into it viewing it as an action flick, or a film "by those Matrix people". Go into it knowing your life and viewpoints will be changed. Go into it to see a masterpiece of modern film. A daring, controversial, memorable piece of filmmaking that goes beyond all expectations and emerges as one of those films that you will immediately want to see again.
Like films such as American History X, V for Vendetta will cause you to never look at the world the same way again. It has the potential to change lives, and it will do so if only the viewer has a mind open enough and non-conformed enough to hear the powerful message of freedom it is offering.
If you don't appreciate this film, it is more than likely because you are the drones V was rebelling against.
Movie Review: Exceptional Filmmaking Summary: 5 StarsEvery once in a while a film comes along that provokes your way of thinking. Fight Club did that in the 90's and this movie does that for this decade. The story follows Evy Hammond (Natalie Portman), who meets a radical who calls himself V, and dressed in the likeness of Guy Fawkes. V exposes the tyranny and treason behind the futuristic government of Norsefire, which rules England with an iron fist. V teaches Evy how to not live in fear of the government, and all the while his plan unfolds to bring a revolution and freedom to the country. There's not a bunch of violence, but when there is you are at full attention to the beautiful directing and cinematography. Oh, and did I mention Hugo Weaving is V? The man known as Agent Smith from The Matrix Trilogy and Elrond from LOTR, is at the top of his game. I love everything about this movie and I highly recommend it to everyone.
Movie Review: Lame, boring and politically confused Summary: 2 StarsEven though this movie had some good libertarian sentiments ("People should not fear their government, their government should fear the people") and it was delightful to me to see one of the Western world's greatest centers of tyranny get blown up (when will they do a movie about the War of 1812?), this movie's left-wing slant and political incoherence was just too much to bear. Apparently, when Fascism finally comes to Britain its main policy goals will be to outlaw homosexuality and Korans. Naturally, considering this script was written by the perverted Wachowski brothers and based on a comic book by the snake-worshipping degenerate Alan Moore, the guiding philosophies behind their fictional dictatorship is Christianity and conservatism. How utterly asinine. Everyone knows that the road to serfdom is paved with liberal intentions. Tyrannies usually come to power promising Liberty, Equality and Brotherhood, not limited government and an ethos of "Do Unto Others."
I'd like to see a movie about the thousands of Western European and Canadian men in prison for thought crimes against the Left, such as questioning the official version of the so-called Holocaust, for writing or speaking out against the homosexual agenda or opposing the immigration invasion of their countries. Who knows where such left-wing oppression will end? A Reign of Terror, a Gulag? I look forward to the day when government will start to fear the people, but by diverting attention from the real enemies of freedom, this movie only makes that day more unlikely.
Movie Review: Remarkable. Summary: 4 StarsThis is a remarkably good movie and looks fantastic in high quality. In fact, writing about it now makes me want to go pop it into my HD player. Although a little preachy at times, the story is great, SFX are impressive, and the dialogue is something that cannot be missed. I was not captivated by the additional features, which was disappointing, but only a fraction of the overall experience.
This is one of the best HDDVD action movies out there and one that should not be missed in high definition.
Movie Review: Great movie on how to be an educated paranoid Summary: 5 StarsIf you think George W. just may be the Antichrist, that your phone could be tapped, or you just don't trust the government all that much then this is the movie for you!
Seriously, it is a really good movie in the same social commentary view as The Matrix. Basically, it boils down to free yourself and rid the world of oppressive controls.
If that does not sound like your cup of tea, well then you can see some of the other reviewers opinions on it.
best line: "The people should not fear its government, the government should fear its people."
