Movie Reviews of UshpizinMovie Review: Wonderful and inspiring Summary: 5 StarsWonderful film for the whole family, and deeply moving. A must see. I can sum up the film's essense this way: When we are weak, then He is strong. Before it was over, my 14 year old daughter said, This is now one of my favorite movies. B'Shem Adonai
Movie Review: Love and lemons Summary: 4 StarsMoeshe and Mali need a miracle. The bill collectors are at the door. He doesn't even have enough money to by a citron for Succoth, or the availablity to build a sukkot for the ceremonies. Then the miracle happens; a chance clerical snafu selects them to recieve a charity donation, a friend finds them an unused sukkot and Moeshe begins his ceremony believing his luck has turned.
There is but one more test. Two less than savory characters - escaped convicts - show up and remind Moeshe of his past affiliations. They threaten everything...Moeshe's conviction, his status in the community and even his marriage. "Ushpizin" is a study in his tests, and carries the story with conviction and love, all without the cheap theatrics one would associate with a Hollywood treatment of similar material.
"Ushpizin" is a very good movie for the morals that it attempts to convey. The acting is understateded, delightfully so (especially Shuli Rand as Rabbi Moeshe). These are not glamorous characthers and they must carry the movie on their abilty to convice you that their life and faith is real, as well as the sense of fragilty. I found myself cringing inside when the two criminals began to disrupt the neighborhood and Mali (Michal Bat Sheva Rand, again excellent performance) found herself struggling with the decision to confront or retreat. It is one of many heart-rending moments in a very emotional movie.
Movie Review: Don't Recall Any Other Film Showing Such A Beautiful Love affair With God! Summary: 5 Stars I saw my library's copy of this, and had to then purchase it for myself, plus 2 more for gifts! This movie is one that I want to watch over and over again, and share with everyone! I really loved the characters of Moshe and his wife Mali. The love between them, and their love and relationship with God including some of their private and personal, plus shared conversations with Him, were so heartwarming to watch.I can't remember ever seeing a movie portray so beautifully and perfectly just how natural it should be for us to interact with our Heavenly father. An excellent example for protestant Christians, such as myself,to follow,as well. I can't wait for my own copy to arrive so I can watch it again. This was a feast on every level from beginning to end.
I had a lump in my throat and teary eyes, several times, and there are also several laugh-out-loud funny parts, because of their 'holy guests',LOL!
One certainly feels edified after watching this Jewel.
Movie Review: Y-hap Summary: 5 StarsOutstanding movie. Quality, great story line, moving and touching, funny and thought provoking. Refreshing, no bad language, filth, sexual indecency. Not a movie based on hollywoods typical formula..sex,lies,videotape, and violence. A movie with many great lessons.
Movie Review: Realistic, thoughtful, and positive. Summary: 5 StarsI thoroughly enjoyed this dvd. First off, it doesn't portray traditional Jews as "ultra-orthodox" lunatics, but as real people, with real problems. It's also a touching love story between a man and his (beautiful) wife, and what they have to go through to properly observe Sukkot, the Jewish festival of "booth-dwelling", which the Israelites first experienced upon exiting Egypt. Crazy ex-friends and some current wacky ones add to the story, which I found very nice. Two thumbs up.
