Movie Reviews of Ushpizin

Movie Review: Ushpizin
Summary: 5 Stars

Ushpizin was one of the best movies I've watched in years. Well acted, it moves at a good clip. As an Orthodox Christian priest I was was quite taken by the many common traits shared by Orthodox Judaism and Orthodox Christianity. I highly recommend this movie. In an age of polarization it is good to see how much the great religions have in common, and how all of us struggle to be better people, all the while seeking a closer relationship with God. I concluded the movie by getting together with an Orthodox rabbi friend, over a few good beers.

Movie Review: Profoundly Moving, Endearing, Delightful
Summary: 5 Stars

The movie is a profoundly moving, endearing, and delightful story of Moshe and his wife's earnest desire to live a holy life for God. It is in no way "lighthearted," so ignore that comment in the product description. There are lighthearted moments of very typical Israeli humor, but that makes their earnestness and faithfulness all the more moving.

I'm buying this dvd after having seen it on netflix. Superb acting, and I loved that it was filmed in the Jewish Quarter in Israel. All of it was authentic.

Great story!

Movie Review: A Beautiful Story of Faith
Summary: 5 Stars

I was deeply moved by this story. A story of "real people" seeking to follow their Lord in obedience, and walk by "faith and not sight".
I identified with them both as they grabble with their lapses in faith but ultimately see that their faith was not misplaced when they see the fulfillment of their perserverance rewarded. The acting is superb and moving, the characters real in their portrayal of "humans" seeking to live in accord with the "will of God". A story that will bless both believers and unbelievers alike.

Movie Review: Realistic, thoughtful, and positive.
Summary: 5 Stars

I thoroughly enjoyed this dvd. First off, it doesn't portray traditional Jews as "ultra-orthodox" lunatics, but as real people, with real problems. It's also a touching love story between a man and his (beautiful) wife, and what they have to go through to properly observe Sukkot, the Jewish festival of "booth-dwelling", which the Israelites first experienced upon exiting Egypt. Crazy ex-friends and some current wacky ones add to the story, which I found very nice. Two thumbs up.

Movie Review: The perfect fruit with which to worship God.
Summary: 5 Stars

One of the few Israeli films that is really good and worth watching. It accurately depicts the life of Orthodox fundamentalist Jews. It shows their faith and customs. Their warmth and hospitality. Their questioning and searching and even their gullibility. What other people would spend money they can not afford on the perfect fruit with which to do God's commandments. It is a wonderful film
