Movie Reviews of Ushpizin

Movie Review: Keen insights into the depths of God's heart
Summary: 5 Stars

This amazing film brings to light something that most in Christianity--and, I suspect, most Jews in their religion--miss entirely. The point is that God is EVERYTHING and we are NOTHING apart from Him. In Hebrew there is no verb of being except that found within the name of God (Jehovah or Yahweh) itself. Therefore, technically speaking, it is impossible in the Hebrew language to say, "I am," or "You are," apart from God Himself. In Hebrew, the verb of being is implied, not explicit, except in the Name (of God).

In this way, God conveys to us that if we are to find real life and the real meaning of life, it must be found IN Him and in no other way. This is the message conveyed in "Ushpizin"--for we are ALL "guests" until we find our dwelling place in God and He makes home in our heart. Until heaven and earth are connected in us by living a life of Jacob's ladder--the ladder that connects heaven to earth and earth to heaven--we have NO REALITY in us. Jesus said, "I AM the WAY, the REALITY, and the LIFE."

Movie Review: It's Not What You Think
Summary: 5 Stars

Ushpizin is already famous as the first general release ultra-orthodox Jewish movie. During the intermediate days of Passover I finally had a chance to see it with my family.

Most would tell you it's about a chassidic Jewish couple living in a religious Jerusalem neighborhood who are visited by some unsavory characters from the husband's past, during the religious holiday of Succot. And it is that.

But for those who are looking, what this movie really is, is a chassidic lesson from Breslov chassidus, from the teachings of the grand rabbi, Rabbi Nachman of Breslov. The lesson is hidden in the opening music, the lesson presented during the yeshiva scene, the climactic event, the result and the closing music.

It's a beautiful and touching movie, in Hebrew with English subtitles, displaying a rich religious life, and some challenges and conflicts of the life, as well as some of the conflict between 'religious' Israel and 'secular' Israel.

I highly recommend it.

Movie Review: Don't Recall Any Other Film Showing Such A Beautiful Love affair With God!
Summary: 5 Stars

I saw my library's copy of this, and had to then purchase it for myself, plus 2 more for gifts! This movie is one that I want to watch over and over again, and share with everyone! I really loved the characters of Moshe and his wife Mali. The love between them, and their love and relationship with God including some of their private and personal, plus shared conversations with Him, were so heartwarming to watch.I can't remember ever seeing a movie portray so beautifully and perfectly just how natural it should be for us to interact with our Heavenly father. An excellent example for protestant Christians, such as myself,to follow,as well. I can't wait for my own copy to arrive so I can watch it again. This was a feast on every level from beginning to end.

I had a lump in my throat and teary eyes, several times, and there are also several laugh-out-loud funny parts, because of their 'holy guests',LOL!

One certainly feels edified after watching this Jewel.

Movie Review: Delightful human story
Summary: 5 Stars

Well done, entertaining and inspiring too. I was skeptical about watching this movie since it is a) foreign, b) about Jewish people and c) religious, all things I am not, however I was very glad I did watch it.

First, the acting was good, both the emotion and humor translated well through the screen, especially in the character of the wife who I particularly enjoyed watching. I thought the lessons and the trials that the main characters faced, a husband and wife who have unexpected guests drop in for a special celebration, were universal in nature. I could relate to how often when we are reaching for a goal it seems that life tests our resolve in ways that can be both heart breaking and comical.

This movie shows all of that and more without being preachy or taking life too seriously.

Movie Review: A Very Special Movie!
Summary: 5 Stars

Ushpizin means guests in Hebrew and that is what this Orthodox couple get when the man's brother comes to visit. Moshe, the husband has recently turned Orthodox and married an Orthodox woman. He is poor and is hoping desperately for a son with his wife. His brother and a friend come to visit after escaping from a prison. Moshe takes them in and the couple attempt to treat them well as dictated by their religious views. Trouble follows. Is the couple being challenged by god? Is their faith enough? Are the Ushpizin dangerous? I can tell you that what you witness will move your heart. I failed to go see this film in the theater and even after buying the DVD, took years to watch it. What a mistake! I had this wonderful film at my fingertips and failed to notice. I'm glad I watched it tonight.
