Movie Reviews of Unlocking the Mystery of LifeMovie Review: Excellent Scientific Presentation; Needs More Lay Terms Summary: 5 Stars
My background in science is very limited: I only know what they taught me in 17 years of public education. I went to kindergarten through my state college undergraduate degree at tax-supported, government-regulated, union-run, bureaucratic Education Code facilities.
Throughout my education, I constantly was bombarded with leftist propaganda which sought to override my monotheistic views with atheistic or pluralistic views. They sought to explain truth to me in one-sided terms, relying heavily on their own seniority in the matters at hand. Sadly, this is how it is in America today: we give education to the bureaucracies and labor unions, and let them take from our incomes to pay for them, often times against our own doctrines or the doctrines we'd like our kids to learn.
Evolution Theory was an interesting part in my "education" for those 17 years. As the government-sponsored, labor union teachers were teaching me, they routinely left the word "Theory" out of their sentences and expected us to think that life was a gradual development with no explainable beginning.
While that left-wing indoctrination process was sad at best, the good part is that I managed to use the brain in my skull to know at least one thing: there was another side to this so-called truth that they weren't telling us students. As I have grown older, like the most of us, I am sure, I have been able to fill in the blanks for the sides they never taught us. (I guess they thought they could just lull the students into their left-wing, propagandist ways... so malevolent, insidious, and sinister.)
But anyway, I had not been knowledgeable about Intelligent Design Theory until I watched this movie, Unlocking the Mystery of Life. What made this DVD interesting for me is that it provided another side to what public academia refuses to teach or learn themselves: that Evolution THEORY is as much to be challenged as any other theory arising in science, theology, religion, or otherwise.
Now, I have never accepted the Evolution Theory, though as a youth without much interest in biological science, I didn't have much to counter it, obviously. (No one was teaching us anything else; I just knew what they were feeding us was wrong.) I have my own theology which has always stated that the One True God created everything in His omnipotence, but of course, that was left out of my schools, as well. So this DVD is refreshing for people who hunger for knowledge and varying viewpoints instead of force-fed diatribes on supposed reasons not to believe in a Creator God.
As this DVD was presented, there is no tie whatsoever to religion, other than to discredit the religion of Evolutionism. This is all science, baby. And for that reason, I have one, and only one, "complaint," if you will, and that is that some of the information went over my head. Because I am not a science guy, I had to try real hard to understand what these scientists were trying to get across in this DVD. Thankfully, they used analogies that I could understand: like Evolution Theory being a "creation myth" that pervades various cultures (this was in the Bonus Features section); they explained the "improbability" of dropping thousands of Scrabble letter pieces on the ground and having them put together a cohesive and meaningful textbook of a hundred pages; and similar other concepts.
This is my initial reaction to the film as I just got done watching it all. And again, I have a very limited interest in science and biology, so I think the audience for this type of show should be from one of the following groups: (1) those who love biology and have an open mind (if you are narrow-minded, you won't appreciate this DVD); and (2) those who are not interested in the sciences, but whose intelligence level is rather high (that is, your 14 year-old kid whose main interests are pop music, clothes, and movies will likely fall asleep to this film within the first 4-5 minutes).
So I recommend this movie for open-minded, intelligent people... even if you are one of those types who has tried your whole life to justify your atheism using somewhat scientific principles, if you are open to the fact that Natural Selection does not explain everything (especially the origins), and/or you know that random chance theories cannot explain impracticalities. (On the latter, if "everything" is possible, than why hasn't "everything" happened?)
