Movie Review: A garbage bag full of cliches

I really have to wonder if the people who've labeled this film a classic have ever seen a John Ford movie. Unforgiven is nothing but a bunch of hoary old-movie cliches: the "reformed" bad guy who can't leave his old ways behind; the greenhorn itching for violence who finds he's not cut out for it; the black sidekick who dies at the hands of the bad guys; the slapstick comedy character (the ridiculous journalist). Plus the signature Clint Eastwood touch: nauseating violence designed to show us that the bad guys really deserve the justice that Clint will deliver unto them. Really, you find it in several Eastwood-directed films, from early hackwork like Sudden Impact to the recent (just-as-overrated) Million Dollar Baby.
Summary of Unforgiven
Clint Eastwood and Morgan Freeman play retired down-on-their-luck outlaws who pick up their guns one last time to collect a bounty offered by the vengeful prostitutes of the remote Wyoming town of Big Whiskey. Richard Harris is an ill-fated interloper a colorful killer-for-hire called English Bob.
