Movie Reviews of UndergroundMovie Review: one of the great films Summary: 5 Stars
I have been watching films for almost fifty years and only in the last month have I become aware of Emir Kusturica, the director of Underground. I am slowly watching all is other movies, only because I never want the experience of watching his movies to end. Underground is such an overwhelming experience that you feel exhausted at the end. From the very first shot you are so caught up in the movie that you forget you are watching a movie. This movie makes you realize how cheap and superficial most American movies are. This is a great movie about people caught up in, and overwhelmed, by the forces of history but still, somehow, able to find their way.
Movie Review: A brilliant film! Summary: 5 Stars
I have watched this film many times (I even bought a Laserdisc version with unremovable Chinese & English subtitles) & am always amazed at the endless abundance of new images & ideas I find at each viewing. Its energy & imagination put me to mind of Children of Paradise & Rules of the Game as well as later Fellini & Bunuel.
This movie sets a very high bar. It ain't about the ideology but about the art. It's what & where art should be - must be - today. Sadly filmmakers seem to be turning in the opposite direction.
Guess I'll buy this DVD & watch it again. Sure beats watching CNN & movies about spells & wizards.
Movie Review: Underground Summary: 5 Stars
This long, often bleak black-comic fantasy tracks the misadventures of two Communist buddies over several decades, from WWII through the Tito years and up to the recent Bosnian war. Kusturica has manufactured an epic allegory that is robust, moving, and quite surreal, especially with his phenomenal Fellini-esque set pieces, which ultimately reflect the moral and political disintegration of Yugoslavia into warring ethnic states. Acclaimed for its technical virtuosity and brilliant critique of war's absurdity, "Underground" is a sprawling, brutally funny epic about romance, betrayal, and the anguish of modern life.
Movie Review: Film Starts Here. Talk about this movie! Buy someone a copy. Summary: 5 Stars
When the patriotic Blacky, from the film, has had enough he takes matters into his own hands, with hilarious, redemptive, celebratory results. The film is universal and is very worth watching without subtitles which can be distracting to the excellent acting, but I find that the dialogue helps lend to many metaphorical musings. I plan on watching this film as many times as I've seen Morvern Callar. Too many. The comedy in Underground is fast, subtle, and frequently metaphorical. The musicians are well paid and they are integral to the film. Final thought:"Franz!"
Movie Review: Incredible Summary: 5 Stars
This film is one of the most profound things I've ever seen. It is tragic, hunorous, touching, thought-provoking, all-together crushing. It's almost impossible to put into words. It has a surreal, fiercely imagined landscape of oddball characters who struggle against themselves and the horrors of their country. It's philosophical and magnificent. A shame it wasn't released in the states. It raises many deep questions about the human condition and about human behavior. You will not be disappointed.
