Movie Reviews of Under the Greenwood TreeMovie Review: British humor at its best! Summary: 5 Stars
For you Jane Austin fans; Under the Greenwood Tree is British humor at it's best! I usually watch these types of movies by myself or with my daughters, but my husband watched this movie with me and we had some hardy laughs! Oh, no pun intended. This Thomas Hardy story comes to life with Keeley Hawes as Fancy Day. Fancy arrives in town and has three local admirers vying for her time and attention. The new school mistress attracts the attention of a wealthy land owner, a local farmer and the vicar. Marriage proposals come from all three and Fancy must decide! Very light hearted and entertaining!
Movie Review: Love it, love it, love it! Summary: 5 Stars
I have been watching a lot of BBC period dramas lately - probably way to many - and this is one of my favorites. The story is great, the actors are great, the scenery is great, James Murray is great. You can read other reviews to get a synopsis of the story. I found the chemistry between Keely Hawes and James Murray really nice and believable. I just really enjoy watching this again, and again, and again. I finally had to lend it to a neighbor so that I could take a break from it (but alas, it is on youtube...) It is really worth at least one watch....
Movie Review: Charming film based on Hardy's 19th Century novel Summary: 5 Stars
I first viewed this film on PBS Masterpiece Theatre, and was quite taken with it. As a collector of 19th Century Brit-Lit films and a fan of Thomas Hardy, I could not pass it up, and neither should you if this is your genre. Keeley Hawes, a regular in period British romance/costume dramas, does a great job in her role as Fancy Day, a British schoolteacher who is being pursued by 3 eligible bachelors of varying status in the community. The entire cast does an admirable job, and the film is a very pleasant experience; it will charm you.
Movie Review: Delightful Romance Summary: 5 Stars
The characters in this movie are fun to watch and quite believable. The touches of humor make "Under the Greenwood Tree" even more enjoyable to watch. Love the choir! And although we laughed at them many times, their music was haunting.
The romance is stirring, but not sordid. Fine for family viewing. You really feel the unjustness of the class distinctions and marriage expectations of this time in history. But that just makes the ending more enjoyable.
A fun movie to watch!
Movie Review: Great Period Romance, Absolutely Beautiful Filming Summary: 5 Stars
This was a short (90+ minute) period drama that was a joy to watch. The filming (all done on rural Jersey Island off English coast) truly captured the ambience of a small village in the 1840's. The four seasons through which the story progresses are captured subtly yet convincingly through the snow, spring flowers, summer sunshine, and fall harvest/falling leaves.
If you like period drama and romance, but only have a single evening to devote to it, this is the perfect movie!
