Movie Reviews of Under the Greenwood TreeMovie Review: Romantic to the last drop Summary: 5 Stars
This is a lovely film. Beautiful setting, wonderful character actors playing gentle and believable characters. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, partly because it has the simply gorgeous James Murray on screen 90% of the time, as well as a glowing Keeley Hawes, who I last saw in Mothers & Daughters. Together, the cast and crew have created a timeless romantic tale that is just magical. There is lots of humour and enough will she/won't she to keep you entertained. My only complaint was it all ended way too soon. It's plain that everyone had a great time making this movie, and had a great affection for their characters - which comes across in the making of docu on the dvd.
I would recommend this movie to anyone who likes a fun but detailed costume drama with likeable characters, gorgeous hero and heroine and a cheerable ending.
I loved it.
Movie Review: For the romantic.. Summary: 5 Stars
I've loved this movie from the first time I saw it a couple of years ago on OPB, and couldn't wait to get the DVD! I love a great romance, and by romance I mean the kind you can feel, and relate to. This is a great story about the beauty of true love, and what people will to do find and keep it. Even though the times were simpler, life could still be complicated.
The only thing I would comment on from the TV version vs. the DVD (to the best of my recollection as this is the first time I've seen it in two years), is that they show the greenwood tree more than I remember. The tree does show the passing of time, but I think that the showing of the tree could be shortened ever so slightly. Other than that I LOVE this movie, and would recommend it to every romantic out there.
Movie Review: Simple and beautiful Summary: 5 Stars
I must admit when I first saw the preview for this movie I wasn't so sure about it but I fell in love with it.
Fancy is played perfectly as the educated woman who returns home to begin teaching and playing the church's organ. She is persued by a variety of men and while I won't give away the ending it is truly a satisfying one that doesn't leave you empty-handed.
The costumes are quite simple in this movie compared to other period dramas but it is the storyline that solidly carries this movie through.
If you like movies such as North and South (Richard Armitage) then this one you have to watch - if only to find out how it ends. A personal favourite.
Movie Review: I bought it for my wife; She liked it. What more can I say? Summary: 5 Stars
Well, to give you an idea, she adores the BBC adaptations of Jane Austen novels, The Pallisers, and Elizabeth Gaskell's "Wives and Daughters." This isn't quite in that category, but it is very good.
If there is a complaint, it's that it doesn't follow the book closely enough (The movie makes the preacher out to be more of a pompous something-or-other than does the book, and it makes Fancy less of a flirt than she is in the book), and it could have been longer (!).
But it's light, funny, and entertaining. If you don't require your period pieces to all be dark and gloomy, you should enjoy it.
Movie Review: Under the Greenwood Tree Summary: 5 Stars
This is a very enjoyable movie. I am a Sacred Harp singer and the West Gallery music with its strong singing is akin to SH the difference being its use of instruments and singers sometimes wearing period costumes. The movie is set in rural England at the time when the Oxford Movement was relegating the WG music to the non-conformist chapels or pubs. The romance of three men competing for the hand of the newly arrived village school teacher is fun to watch develop.
Today West Gallery music is making a comeback in some of the chapels of Britain and likewise Sacred Harp groups are springing up across the USA and the UK.
