Movie Reviews of Under the Greenwood TreeMovie Review: Choosing Love or Loyalty Summary: 5 Stars
I definitely recommend this to those who love romantic dramas with a touch of fun. This was a nice surprise period piece. I'm glad Netflix had this available to instantly stream so I could view it first before buying it on Amazon, which I did a few days after I watched it.
I've never read the book, but I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. The chemistry between Keeley Hawes and James Murray was evident from the beginning, and their romantic scenes were more than satisfying. I especially loved their second kiss in the woods when, right after it happens and before it continues, Dick Dewey (Murray) says to Fancy Day (Hawes), "I knew you felt the same, Fancy. I knew it. I tasted it on your lips the first time I kissed you." I mean, come on, that is hot! I'd want to kiss him again, too! You just don't hear lines like that anymore. And what is even hotter is the scene in the river with a half-naked James Murray. Now I know he's a little scrawny, but the faint ab lines and the wet bod are plenty tasty eye candy for me.
Aside from all that hot stuff, I enjoyed the classic struggle Fancy was faced with, choosing love or choosing to be loyal. It's fun to watch all the tension and the misunderstandings unfold as the end of the story draws nearer.
This really was a great BBC classic, and the quality of the picture is very comfortable to watch. It's not fuzzy or furry like some of their older productions, the sound is of good quality, and the costumes were well-executed right along with the setting and the props.
Movie Review: Very Romantic Engaging Period Dramady Summary: 5 Stars
I first found out about this movie on You Tube. I watch a montage of all the best parts set to some gorgeous music. After those 5:15 minutes I was sold...I went straight to Amazon, read the reviews and promptly placed my order.
The next 10 days were the longest of my life, when it finally arrived I tore it open and I wasn't dissappointed!! Keely Hawes is a personal favourite and James Murray is now definately a new favourite!!
I was somewhat dissappointed at first by the length of the film, because I am accustomed to my great period dramas (ie Our Mutual Friend, Wives and Daughters) being anything from 4-8 hours long!! So 1 and a half hours seemed a mere preview at first. But the second time round I had to admit that story does fit perfectly into the time frame.
All in all a wonderful movie, wil leave you with that warm, mushy feeling we know so well!!
The Making Of Featurette is quite interesting, although as always, not enough time time given to the stars of the show!!!
My recommendation: Buy it now!! Its a lovely addition to your BBC Library.
Movie Review: A Worthwhile Romantic Voyage - A Hardy Surprise Summary: 5 Stars
This wonderful adaptation of a lesser known Thomas Hardy novel, aired on PBS last night. As the other reviewers noted, I too was not familiar with this Hardy novel and was waiting for the story to turn dark, as it dared to, many times, in this tale of a lovely young woman with three very different suitors. Keeley Hawes has been a favorite of mine for some time and she is wonderful here - with a terrific supporting cast. It's a very slight story, but carefully done, and it builds as it progresses toward a refreshingly romantic ending. I thought watching it, "this is what most American movies are missing now - a REAL love story." There is intelligence - and heat - here - and I will absolutely purchase this DVD to see the behind the scenes making of the film. It's a can't miss. A terrific love story, well played and told - and, for Thomas Hardy, a peak into a gentler side of him - unabashed and fiercely romantic. And did I say that I love Keeley Hawes - this is an extremely beautiful and sexy woman.
Movie Review: I adore this movie Summary: 5 Stars
Under the Greenwood Tree is by far one of my favorite films. It is such a departure from the bittersweet and tragic story of Tess and Angel that it is as if another author wrote it. I love the characters, the actors, the music (only one score mind you, but it is beautiful and sets the mood perfectly regardless of repetition), and the story. It is a great status reversal from that in Pride and Prejudice and Jane Eyre.
This film has so much pent up frustration in it that when certain scenes happen (don't worry they are all innocent) you would be hard pressed to want better. It certainly does not hurt that James Murray is painfully handsome and Keeley Hawes always makes for an attractive heroine. The chemistry between Dick and Fancy is what I love best about this film. It is about as physical as you can and still be faithful to the time and characters. If you enjoyed the whole wet shirt scene with Colin Firth you will not be disappointed with this film!
Movie Review: Captivating! Summary: 5 Stars
I found this film to be very captivating. It is based on a Thomas Hardy novel, but fans of Jane Austen will recognize similar themes of class distinctions and financial discussions mixed in with romantic decisions that are always present in her novels as well. The story centers around a newly arrived sophisticated teacher to a rural village in England. Being the only really eligible lady in town she creates quite a stir among the eligible bachelors in the area. And so she must decide between three men. One, a well-to-do elderly business man, the other a well educated and somewhat pompous parson, and thirdly a well intentioned but humble and good looking farmer/carrier lad. There is a lot of physical attraction between the teacher and the humble lad and the scenes between the two are well done. I'm not too sure how realistic the ending is, but I enoyed the movie and was captivated by it.
