Movie Reviews of Unchained MemoriesMovie Review: another very good documentary Summary: 5 Stars
As an African-American I am interested in movies about Black history, Black culture, and life during slavery and historical black events.
As a result I purchased about a dozen DVDs on various subject matter which I am just now getting around to viewing.
Unchained Memories
This DVD gave me more insight into living as a slave on a plantation. To experience slavery by those that were actually there is a very powerful eye opener. We all know something about the slave owners and their property of slaves, but to hear it talked about from the mouths of the actual slaves themselves is very powerful.
I strongly recommend this DVD for those still looking for more insight into slavery way of life and a firsthand account of what went on after the civil war.
Movie Review: From the USA archives - Interviews of former Slaves before they died Summary: 5 Stars
This is for anyone who wants to hear the real stories of people who were once slaves as recorded by the US Government, in the 1930s, before they died. This is fantastic production using current and famous Black actors and actresses of the big screen to read the narratives of the slaves, stored in the US archives, brings each documented recollection to life. The ex-slaves that were interviewed were all in the 80's and older.
No one can say that they have studied or are interested in the Slave Trade (the African Holocaust) and not have this in their DVD collection. Close your eyes and listen to each narrative, it will be the closest that you will ever become to how slaves had to live and their emotional struggles during slavery.
Movie Review: This is wonderful! Summary: 5 Stars
It is hard watching stories on this subject. It is so much pain. Sometimes, it is very uncomfortable. You think, how could someone do such things. But, this somehow, felt like listening to a story from your mother, your grandmother or sister. (Hence the narrative part lives up to its name). As I was being educated about my ancestors, I could not help but feel pride. I felt the depts of thier pain by listening to these narratives. These people, lived without shoes, ate very little, got whipped for the smallest of "crimes," but managed to survive, and to care for one another and to build families--if only for a little while. I bought this DVD and will buy the book. Too bad they did not offer it in a set.
Movie Review: Amazing Documentary Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this documentary to supplement a 5th grade unit on slavery. I can't imagine a better way for students to learn about the experiences African Americans faced under the institution of slavery than these first hand accounts. This documentary has been wonderfully done. The 'actors' are such a small part of the overall production. Not once did it detract from the themes of the film.
There were a couple bits that I choose to skip due to content and age of the audience. And while the picture painted was harsh, it was reality for those living in slavery. Clearly anyone viewing this with children of any age needs to be ready to have a heavy discussion prior to and after viewing.
Movie Review: Appreciate listening to memories of slave life... Summary: 5 Stars
Listening to the actors "recall these memories" reminded me of the slave narratives I read while in college - desciptions of punishments given to terrorize other slaves, slave weddings and funerals, etc. I was able to visualize the experiences these people shared with their interviewers - I guess that is due to the ensemble of talented actors who participated on this project :) Don't sleep on this DVD. I believe this is something parents should watch with their children, so Americans (especially African-Americans) can remember this important piece of American history.
