Movie Reviews of U2: Vertigo//2005 - Live from ChicagoMovie Review: Magical Evening of Spirit Elevation in Chicago .... Summary: 5 Stars
In support of their latest cd release, "How to Dismantle An Atomic Bomb," U2 embarked upon a world tour in 2005, dubbed the "Vertigo Tour." This DVD captures the tour on a stop in Chicago on May 10th, 2005, which also happened to be lead singer Bono's 45th birthday. Perhaps therefore he was feeling exceptionally exuberant and poetic, as was the band, because this was one magical concert, well-captured in pure digital 5.1 surround sound. After this, my 7th time enjoying the show in the surround sound comfort of my living room, I decided to post this review.
The concert opens with the perhaps salutory "City of Blinding Lights" from Atomic Bomb, then proceeds right into the tour's title song, "Vertigo," followed by "Elevation" from the band's 2001 release, All That You Can't Leave Behind, wherein the crowd completes (without missing a beat) some of the lyrics for Bono. This is a rousing round of opening tunes for sure, and a good set up for the next several ones, a hypnotic medley of tunes apparently played in a much smaller Chicago gig the band had 20+ years before. Bono introduces the medley, saying, "This is for those of you who were at the Aragon .... 20 years ago ... 25 ... 23 ... " while The Edge proceeds with the fast tempo guitar introduction to "Cry" to kick things off. Bono's clear memory of that evening (and the club's name for that matter) indicates his and the band's love for the city of Chicago, where, as Bono shares later on in an introduction to "Miracle Drug," he also "fell in love" with the music of Miles Davis; specifically, the album Kind of Blue (widely lauded as not only Miles' most magical, but perhaps the best jazz recording ever). I have to believe that even the ever-brooding Miles would have been flattered.
"Cry" is follow by "Electric Co," the haunting "An Cat Dubh," and ends with "Into The Heart" during which Bono selects a young lad from the audience to walk the stage, a moment not soon forgotten for that lad. Next up is "Beautiful Day" where in the final improv vocals Bono belts out "Chicago, Chicago, on my birthday, a beatiful day ... for me anyhow" before the tune ends and he says "Happy birthday, Jo-Jo." Jo-Jo is Bono's nickname for his first-born child, a girl Jordan, who happens to also share her Dad's birthday. Apparently poetry runs deeply in the Hewson family.
The remainder of the show reveals the band in top musical form as they lead us on a well-crafted tour of flawlessly performed songs from The Joshua Tree, Achtung Baby!, Unforgettable Fire, Rattle and Hum, as well as others from All That You Can't Leave Behind and Atomic Bomb. Bono does take a few moments to promote his "End Global Poverty" platform (we would be surprised and perhaps disappointed if he didn't, now wouldn't we?), wherein he makes a comparison in his campaign to JFK's mission in the early 60's to put man on the moon - "It's the right thing to do," before launching into the band's smash hit "One" from Achtung Baby! For the band's encore, they perform in almost unplugged fashion, two tunes from Atomic Bomb: "Original of the Species," inspired collectively by both Bono's daughters and the female progeny of the other band members, and "Yahweh," a U2 nod to the role that their Christian faith plays in their lives. It in these last two songs that we realize perhaps more than ever just how honest the music of U2 can be, as the focus seems to be (more than ever) on the lyrics than the music.
I still remember browsing through a record (yes, as in vinyl records) store back in 1986 when I was stopped in my tracks by the anthemic "Where the Streets Have No Name" as it came on the store's sound system, revisiting the same feeling I had upon my first listen to "New Year's Day" several years before. This DVD recaptures that same magic, albeit through deeper meaning as I have grown up with the band.
U2 have a way of being emotional without being sappy; of being truthful without being brash; of demonstrating humility without losing their bravado. This DVD shows them in perhaps the zenith of their career, and proves they deserve the status of "world's greatest rock band."
