Movie Reviews of U2 - Best of 1990-2000Movie Review: Great collection, but it still needs more Summary: 4 Stars
This DVD is great - we finally have all of their videos from 1990-2000 (especially the clips from ZOOROPA and POP which I'd previously seen once or twice). That said, it could have been a whole lot better - U2 should have gathered every single video they've made in their career and put it out (The Best Of 1980-1990 video collection still hasn't been released on DVD, and even though they came out in 2001, the videos for "Elevation" and "Walk On" weren't included) Like I said this DVD is great but here's what should have been:U2: The Complete Videos DVD 1: 1. I Will Follow 2. Gloria 3. New Year's Day 4. Sunday Bloody Sunday (Live) 5. Pride In The Name Of Love (2 versions) 6. The Unforgettable Fire 7. A Sort Of Homecoming 8. Bad (2 Live versions) 9. Where The Streets Have No Name 10. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For 11. With Or Without You 12. Bullet The Blue Sky (Live) 13. Desire 14. When Love Comes To Town 15. Angel Of Harlem 16. All I Want Is You 17. The Fly 18. Mysterious Ways 19. Even Better Than The Real Thing (3 versions) 20. One (3 versions + documentary) 21. Until The End Of The World 22. Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses DVD 2: 1. Numb (2 versions) 2. Lemon 3. Stay (Faraway, So Close) 4. Miss Sarajevo (video + documentary) 5. Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me 6. Discotheque 7. Staring At The Sun (2 versions) 8. Last Night On Earth 9. Gone (Live) 10. Please (2 versions) 11. Mofo 12. If GOD Will Send His Angels 13. The Sweetest Thing 14. The Ground Beneath Her Feet 15. Beautiful Day (3 versions) 16. Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of (2 versions) 17. Elevation (Tomb Raider mix) 18. Walk On (video + America: Tribute To Heroes performance) 19. 2002 Super Bowl performance 20. The Hands That Built America (Theme from 'Gangs Of New York') 21. Electrical Storm (video + documentary) 22. The Best Of 1990-2000 History mix
Movie Review: MORE GREAT STUFF Summary: 4 Stars
I can't believed the majority of these videos have been around for about 10 years and I'm only just now seeing them. "The Best Of" is just another example of the miracle of DVD. It preserves as a perfect time-capsule the most creative, energetic and inspiring period of U2's development. For the most part, each video feels brand new, which means that, like much of U2's music, they will stand the test of time. The packaging of the DVD is terrific; I was a little creeped-out by the blank place-holder for The History Mix disc (how's that for prescience on the part of the U2 marketers?). And the disc itself is smartly arranged; on many of the videos, you can choose the director's cut you want to watch. Each video also has director commentary, and a few of them offer documentaries. All three docs are fascinating, providing some insights into Bono's character (he's great at imitations) that I'd never seen before. Best videos are both versions of "One," the live "Until the End of the World" (what a rocking show that was), "Electrical Storm," "Numb," "Stay," "Beautiful Day," "Lemon" (one of the bonus tracks), both versions of "Stuck in a Moment" and "Miss Sarajevo." "Even Better ..." feels bit dated though it's packed with imagery; "Mysterious Ways" also feels a little too early-90s, and "Discotechque" ... well, it demonstrates why POP won't hold up as well as The Joshua Tree. "Hold Me ..." is ruined by flim clips from a forgettable "Batman" movie, though the animation looks nice. "Staring at the Sun" is well-directed by Ridley Scott's son, but it's as vague as the song. As for "The Fly" ... great song, funny opening sequence (set to "The Fly Lounge Mix"), but too dark and undercooked. Still, it's a treat to have all these videos in one place. U2 is the greatest rock band in history and I'm excited about their next 10 years.
Movie Review: Glad I took the chance Summary: 4 Stars
Although I have 99% of U2's music, I was never really exposed to their videos. This DVD gave me a great chance to "catch up"! My absolute favorites are "Electrical Storm" and "Discoteque" since they give us a chance to see another side of the band members personalities, especially Larry's! Kudos to him for having the courage to stand out a little bit more!
I, too, was frustrated at the missing disc and blame Amazon for not explaining it in their buyer info (unless I of course missed it.) They could have used the opportunity to explain how to get the second disc and made an "upsell" with me. Oh well.
The DVD was also a little cumbersome in its navigation, but once you figure out the quirks you've got it.
I LOVED the commentaries and the small documentaries and the bonus tracks. I'm glad I made this purchase and am looking for more video material.
Movie Review: Where are the buffaloes? Summary: 4 Stars
If they had just included the Pellington version of "One" on this dvd, I'd have given it five stars. But no -- somehow the decision was made to wrap this dvd in misleading packaging. I'm all the more bitter because that particular video is my favorite. Why anyone would think it was a good idea to include a documentary of the different videos for "One" and then not placing all three versions on the dvd is beyond me. An appalling decision.
Movie Review: Great Collection Summary: 4 Stars
This is one of the better DVDs that collects a bands videos. Being a bit of a geek I like the director commentaries and Documentaries and alternate versions. I found the disc a bit hard to navigate at times. The classic U2 videos are all there but I am quite smitten with "Electrical Storm" which features Larry Mullen Jr (usually hiding in the back somewhere)and Samantha Morton portraying a couple.
