Movie Reviews of U2 - Best of 1990-2000Movie Review: Honest comments from a new U2 fan. Summary: 5 Stars
I had never really payed much attention to U2. Other than bobbing my head whenever With or Without You came on the radio, or laughing at the silly video for "Numb" when I saw it on TV... I was never a huge fan. But recently I have found myself strangely drawn to this amazing band, after downloading the song "Stay (Faraway, So Close)" from their album Zooropa. There's just so much beauty in that song that it made me want to find out more about these guys. So I downloaded, and I researched, and when the time came to redeem a faulty Coldplay DVD for another product, this video collection caught my eye. I loved it. Absolutely loved it. There's not a single video I disliked, and everything from the short documentaries to the commentary tracks by the videos' directors, I found fascinating. I especially fell in love with the slick packaging, even if at first I was irked by having an empty DVD space (not a problem once you purchase the Greatest Hits collection on CD, though-- it comes with an extra DVD). My favorite video is, of course, the very powerful "Stay (Faraway, So Close)", but other standouts include "Electrical Storm", "If God Will Send His Angels", "Miss Saravejo", "One" and the hilarious campfest "Discoteque". Oh, and here are some amusing Easter Eggs to be found on the DVD: The Fish Tank-- Go to the video menu for "One." Press "1" or "01" and enter on your remote. Repeat this two more times. You will see a fish tank with some very peculiar fish in it. ^^ The correct order of alternate videos-- Press stop twice on the main menu, and then play. William Borroughs-- Go to Bonus Tracks and enter the menu for "Last Night on Earth" and press "8" or "08" and hit enter.
Movie Review: Great visuals to great songs Summary: 5 Stars
One of the great things about music video DVD's is you can see literal pieces of art when you want without having to sit through MTV 24/7 hoping they'd play it(and honestly who can?) Songs like Stay, Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Hrses and The Ground Beneath Her Feet barely got video airplay which is a shame. Here's a list of some of the video highlights: Even Better Than the Real Thing: Visually great video with the infamous "rotating camera" move(think the Matrix but real-time movements going around the musician vertically) Mysterious Ways: Shot somewhere in the Middle East I believe with apparent shimmering lens to match the wah guitar of Edge Electrical Storm: confusing video but visually appealing video featuring Samantha Morton(from Minority Report) One: 2 of the 3 versions are featured(the "buffalo" version isn't included) but the bar and the crossdressing first version is included Discotheque: Be honest, you laughed at this. Whether it was actually funny or just plain silly, can't deny it's a very colorful and vibrant video Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me: It would work without all the Batman Forever scenes being a bit louder than the actual song but it's basically a showdown between The Fly(Bono's stereotypical persona) and Mephisto(the devil reincarnated as a lounge singer) Numb: One of the funniest videos. The Edge just basically gets assaulted by feet, hands, rope, women and belly dancers while he sings the droning mantra. Watch Edge's facial expressions: he doesn't laugh once Lemon: the debut of Mephisto and the video with the action captions at the bottom (e.g : Man walking(half speed) showing exactly that and so on The Ground Beneath Her Feet: Tie-in with the movie Million Dollar Hotel There's more but these are probably the coolest visually or just plain good songs
Movie Review: U2 Enthusiast Must-have Summary: 5 Stars
I really dig U2 and have been a fan for many years. So, of course, I purchased this DVD to add to my collection as soon as it came out.It has bunches of videos I've never seen or forgotten about and a few documentaries that give you an insight to how this band progressed through the 90's and why there are 3 "one" videos. I like that you can randomize the play order of the videos, you can just let it play at a party or whatever. The music videos are great, but I want more interaction from the band. Some more interviews from these years would have been nice and maybe more behind the scenes views of the videos. It feels kind of empty. I am REALLY dissapointed that the 2nd "One" video was not included at all, the one with the running buffalo. It's my favorite song and my favorite music video for that song and it's missing. They do talk about it in the documentary about "One" but that's all you get to see. Oh, well, I do have the music video on my Achtung Baby video, but I really wanted it in this collection. Also, I'm dissapointed that the DVD-ROM content is for Windows users only. Plenty of DVD's include content that both Mac's and PC's can access, but unfortunately, not this one. The Foo Fighters did it to me, too, on their new bonus DVD. That stinks. I hate ".exe" applications. I appreciate that they left a spot for the DVD that came with the Best Of CD. Nice thinking. If you really want to see some performance from the band, get the Elevation Tour live from Boston DVD, it's as close as you can get to being at the concert again. A very nice DVD. All in all, I do recommend this DVD to U2 fans everywhere. Peace!
Movie Review: 5 Stars cause it is GREAT & Cross-Generational Summary: 5 Stars
I was never a big U2 fan but strangely enough what made me a Fan was the Million Dollar Hotel CD (think it was just Bono on this). Long story short...that somewhat strange CD made me start rethinking my appreciation of Bono and the musical skills of the band which HAS proved over the years that they ARE very skilled musicians and artists. I think reason I wasn't a fan so much was because I got force fed a diet of whatever was on the radio and my favorite songs aren't usually what is played on radio (or TV).
As years have gone by...I have looked for ways to not only entertain myself...but my granddaughter. BEST PART of this DVD collection is that I can SHARE it with her...I don't have to worry that there is going to be rude and crude comments between the videos. Videos are "sexy" but compared to what is on TV now...this is better than HM...if you know what I mean. WE love dancing around and singing together while this DVD is on. It's just plain good for all ages IMHO. Most of the videos on this DVD I NEVER saw before due to MTV/VH1 past playlists.
I became aware of these videos about a year ago when Comcast Online put up ALOT of their videos in a pre-release for a CD coming out. IF I wasn't a big fan before...I became one upon seeing those videos.
Movie Review: These are Films, not Videos Summary: 5 Stars
... In a form of short films. I almost think it is wrong to call them videos, but for the sake of this review I will conform.
The videos range from performances, studio or live, abstract, narrative, movie theme songs and there is even a cartoon!! There are some bonus videos that are also really awesome like "The Ground Beneath Her Feet", which I think is one of the best songs U2 has ever recorded. There are also audio tracks from the directors that you can listen to, so you can get some insight on what they were trying to do when making the video. Also with DVD the qualities of the videos are perfect, the sound and picture is crystal clear.
..some of these videos I have never seen and I have been a fan for over ten years. ....
If you aren't a fan or already are you should at least watch these videos just for the artistic editing, photography, directing and see how the band can adapt or act to different environments. "Electrical Storm" is a perfect example of this paradigm . To watch this fine band change over the course of a decade is almost surreal. U2 has always been more than a band and I must say that this group of videos or short films rather shows that.
