Movie Reviews of U Turn

Movie Review: JLo's First Porn
Summary: 4 Stars

Great movie. Billy Bob is hilarious when he say's, "Aw, you done pissed me off now!" Characters are whacky but great. Jacquin Phoenix does a great job of being pissed off and beating the sh#% out of Penn...and of course, the scene where J. Lopez and Nick Nolte are...well, just see the movie.

Movie Review: Definately worth seeing if you like black comedies.
Summary: 4 Stars

Only a step below Pulp Fiction or the Usual Suspects. It's dark but fun. Great plot, great characters, great cast, excellent acting. I would really rate it a 4.5 stars. It should have been a little shorter. No other complaints.

Movie Review: A Light Classic of the Late "Scuz Film" Era
Summary: 3 Stars

Oliver Stone, the director of "U-Turn", was a natural to try his hand at the 90's genre that has come to be known as "Scuzz" films (of which Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction" is the sine qua non). This film has much to recommend it, most notably Stone's evocative editing style that has become his signature. Because the film makes a muted attempt at allegory, however (carefully observe the names and occupations of the 4 main characters), it often lacks the Absurdist sensibility that the best scuzz films do, and, at certain points the plot seems to take rather jarring and arbitrary turns. But the film, like a failed work of art coming late in the career of an accomplished artist, does carry a certain cache as a "film by Oliver Stone" and can and should be enjoyed in that context - appropriately as a video rental!

Movie Review: I didn't find this movie great, but worth watching
Summary: 3 Stars

This movie is filled with people you will recognize. Sean Penns' character is the basis of the movie. It is basically just the story of a day that will have you asking "what could go wrong next" and "how bad can this guys day get". I definitely found the movie worth watching. Some wierd camera camera angles and shots let you know the director is "Oliver Stone". Joaquin Phoenix plays a hilarious character and every scene with him is great. Billy Bob Thorton plays a good role as a the crazy mechanic, who you definitely would not want working on your car. If you like Oliver Stone or movies like "Very Bad Things" you should enjoy this one.

Movie Review: Did I really just watch this? 2.5 stars
Summary: 2 Stars

U Turn is an extremely bizarre movie from Oliver Stone. It has a great cast and god plot. After the plot is introduced, a man wanders into a crazy town..well everything then goes to hell.
First of all, for a movie with such a good cast (Sean Penn, Billy Bob Thornton, John Voight, Joaquim Phoenix, Nick Nolte, Claire Danes), why the heck is Jennifer Lopez the lead female role? That's absolutely ridiculous! She does a lousy job and almost single handingly throws the movie in the garbage. She just seems so fake that you don't even care.
To tell you the truth, she shouldn't even be an actress in my opinion.

The screenplay pretty much ruins the movie by itself after becoming too odd. For a movie called u-turn, I was expecting a lot of twists but found none. That is sad.
The movie is about Bobby (Sean Penn) whose car troubles wander him into a little Arizona town. He meets a poor mechanic played with brilliant finesse by the always wonderful Billy Bob Thorton. He adds savage dark humor to everything. Bobby has to wait until it gets repaired. But a lot happens until then. He becomes infatuated with an apache woman (Jennifer Lopez) until he meets her not so friendly husband (Nick Nolte). He meets a freaky cop (Powers Boothe) and has a run in with a punk called TNT (Joaquim Phoenix)in a funny moment. Meanwhile, he is being haunted by a torturous event and hunted down by mysterious people whom he owes money. Unfortunately, the movie completely forgets about that part and becomes too focussed on the town and forgets about why he's actually there in the first place. So, in the end, I was trully wandering what was his profession and why he was in that mess in the first place.

The movie gets boring and way too bizarre and in the end, well to be frank, I didn't really give a sh** about what happened to Bobby or any of these characters. Barely any of them are developed and the only ones I enjoyed were Joaquim Phoenix and Billy Bob Thorton. Thorton gave some memorable lines and one line stayed with me and will stay with me forever:
Sean Penn to Billy Bob Thorton: "40,000 people die every day, why aren't you one of them?"
U Turn is a solid attempt but trully a dissapointment. So don't be attempt by the cast and director and after leaving your rental store, make sure to take a u turn an bring it back..to save yourself 2 pointless hours with very few redeeming moments. Or better yet, just don't rent and save yourself some cash and your time.
