Movie Reviews of U TurnMovie Review: Fall from Grace Summary: 4 Stars
A lot of Wim Wenders, quite a bit of Tarantino, and an actor and director I don't really like. I saw this just after viewing the amiable but minor comic film "Fled," and of course U-Turn is also about fleeing, or in the case of the character very well played by Sean Penn, TRYING to flee. Plenty of U-Turns here, and most of the characters, in every case better than expected, are impressively evil. The "hand of the master" is very much in evidence, you don't want to know ANY of these people, but you can't drag your self away from them. Take it on the level of "Reservoir Dogs," but with something of a moral tale mixed in, and you have a highly watchable, though appealingly nasty, couple of hours. Even the director, a bête noire of mine, gains a minor place in my pantheon.
Movie Review: More of the same from Oliver Stone Summary: 4 Stars
More of the same, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Ilike this flick. It's funny, it's sexy, and it features several greatperformances. By far the best performance is given by Billy Bob Thornton. He lives his role! It's hilarious. Nick Nolte is great as a dirty old man. Sean Penn is Sean Penn. Jennifer Lopez is so sexy. The plot is a little far fetched, but you've got to love it the irony and sympathize with Penn's character. I'd rent the movie first to see if you like it because it's not for everyone.
Movie Review: You probably won't regret it after watching it... Summary: 4 Stars
This is a rentable, fun and entertaining black comedy. One of the few good Oliver Sone movies that doesn't really takes itself too serious. The acting of the dazziling cast (Sean Penn, Jennifer Lopez, Nick Nolte, Claire Danes, Joaquin Phoneix and so on...) is amazing(especially Joaquin Phoneix and Nick Nolte). It's also fun to watch how our "JLo" was before becoming what she is today. well, life is strange...
Movie Review: STAND UP OR I'LL BEAT YOU WHERE YOU SIT! Summary: 4 Stars
Oliver Stone has crafted an amazing, dark, atmospheric, visual head trip. Where to begin? You have GREAT music, performances by Billy Bob, Sean Penn, Joaquin Phoenix (in one of his FEW good roles), and Claire Danes. Superb choices in location as well - Arizona looks dry and dangerous here. It kind of drones on in some spots, but this is definitely one that measures up well with repeated viewings.
Movie Review: 3 stars out of 4 Summary: 4 Stars
The Bottom Line:
Something of a cross between Scorsese's After Hours and the neo-noirs of John Dahl, U-Turn won't win originality points but the performances are good, the characters sufficiently amoral, and the femmes sufficiently fatale to make this an enjoyable 2 hour trip down a dark noir hightway.
