Movie Reviews of U Turn

Movie Review: oliver stone in the noir mode
Summary: 5 Stars

According to my opinion this movie is a cult classic. The atmosphere and humour contained within is such an addiction. I truly rate this movie as being ranked in the top 100 best movies of all time. When I first watched it I was immediatly absorbed in to it completly that I viewed it on repeated occasions. After that it changed my entire perspective on movies.

Oliver Stone is a director to be reckoned with. His distinctive style of directing is in a class of its own. No other director can match up to his calibre. His previous movies suc as 'jfk' and 'natural born killers' received much critisism and box office success. However this venture was in a different category. He has managed to make a brilliant adaptation of John Ridley's novel 'straw dogs'. It stays loyal to the novel as well. The transition of the novel to the screen has resulted in a spectacular outcome. For Oliver Stone this movie probably did not require as much effort on his part due to the simplicity of the plot itself, but still the movie is high on quality.

The movie centres around the theme of 'bad luck' The main lead bobby 'sean penn' is a desperate individual who is determined to fulfill his mission of pying back a russian gangster a loan. He is forced to take a stop in the small town of Superior (Arizona) due to car trouble. He leaves it in the company of Billy Bob Thornton. Meanwhile he tempted to spend time with Jeniffer Lopez though afterwards he discovers that she is married to Nick Nolte. Later a robbery in a store ends in his money being shredded. He is then talked in to killing Lopez by her husband, however he felt unable to. After his attempt to leave the town is unsuccessful he decides to go ahead with the plan to kill Nolte for his hidden stash of cash with Lopez.

The main character is suffering from a case of bad luck syndrome. The movie presents this from a humourous perspective. Bobby's character has negative as well as positive shades. The movie totally relies on his presence to progress through all the segmants. The theme is in the same vain as 'body heat', 'the hot spot', and 'red rock west'. Many situations will seem reminiscent from those movies. This is a symbolic movie and many metephors are present in the scenes.
In regards to the plot, substance is low. However the cinematography, close up camera angles really add to the movies quality. At certain points the movie will feel like a comedy drama with elements of seriousness. The close up frames captures the human feelings of the characters at those moments.
The cinematography is truly the highlight of the movie as well as the scenes between Billy Bob and Sean Penn. The chemistry in the interactions betwen the two make history. The pace of the movie is slow but the viewer's curiousity for the character makes one watch on in eagerness. Maybe a ten to fifteen minute edit would enhance it overall.

Ennio Morricone's background score injects life and a certain atmosphere in to the movie. The combination of western sounds with his italian style of music is a treat to listen to. The music compliments to the atmosphere of the movie and to the feeling of the lanscape of Arizona.

This is the perfect getaway movie if you enjoyed 'Thelma and Louise'

Movie Review: I'm Lovin' It
Summary: 5 Stars

This an extremely hated movie. Not only does it have an average customer review of a mere 3 1/2 stars on Amazon but it appeared in a book called "I Hated,Hated,Hated This Movie" by Roger Ebert.I love the directing, (which is rare cause I don't like
Oliver Stone) I love the screenplay by John Ridley(so much that I later read the book "Stray Dogs" by Ridley). Sean Penn in a funny and great performance plays Bobby Cooper. Bobby is a down-and-out gambler with two of his fingers missing from his hand.
While driving his beloved 1964 1/2 Mustang Convertible to get to Las Vegas to pay off a debt, his radiator hose busts causing him to wander into the town of Superior,Arizona. He meets Darrel
(Billy Bob Thornton at his greasy best), a grease covered mechanic who Bobby later calls (among other things) "dumber than a sack of hammers". After leaving his car to the mechanic he meets the lovely and exotic Grace. A fiery vixen married to a much older man (Nick Nolte), who wants him dead. Turns out Nolte's character Jake wants Grace dead as well. This film in which most of the characters aren't developed except the main characters is the kind of movie I like. The cinematography's weird. The music which any other time would be happy sounds creepy and the climax of the film is awesome. One of Sean Penns best films, A+.

Movie Review: Sean Penn has a really, really bad day
Summary: 5 Stars

If you like happy endings, don't watch or buy this movie. In fact, stop reading right now. This movie is dark; hell, it's a black hole and could be a candidate for the "bummer moview of the decade" award (if there was one). However if you like excellent character development, great acting and offbeat dark humor, this movie is for you. Bobby is in debt to the mob and he blows a radiator hose en route to the pay off, and everything that can possibly go wrong does. His first encounter in this small Arizona desert town is Billy Bob Thornton, playing one of the weirdest characters he has ever played (which is saying a lot for Billy Bob Thornton) as the mechanic from hell. Eventually Bobby abandons hope of ever getting his car back and buys a bus ticket, however in a surrealistic momment it is snatched from his hand, chewed and swallowed by Joaquin phoenix's character who suspects Bobby of flirting with his girlfriend. The horrified expression on Sean Penn's face as he watches his precious bus ticket digested before his very eyes is priceless. There are so many great scenes in this movie I could write 10 pages. Suffice it to say, if you think you are having a bad day and are feeling sorry for yourself, then watch this moview and your day won't look so bad.

Movie Review: A CULT CLASSIC IN A FEW YEARS
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the fourth time in four years that I've been watching Oliver Stone's U TURN. I admit it sincerely, I didn't like it so much the first times but I kept watching it because there was something in the movie that attracted me. And I know by now that any quality movie deserves more than a single showing if you want to express an objective opinion about it.

There is much to discuss about U TURN's content, arty effects or characters. The movie can also be the beginning of hour long discussions on the homages and the references, evident or more subtle, distillated by Oliver Stone along the road. Take the final scene, for instance. Watch it again with the final scene of King Vidor's DUEL IN THE SUN in mind. The Sean Penn-Jennifer Lopez bloody show takes a totally different dimension, doesn't it ?

So one of the reasons of the cult status gained by a peculiar movie is the pleasure the movie creates with each new vision. Like a classical music opus, the film must never make you feel as if you had digested its entire substance. You must feel unsatisfied, ready for a next showing right after the end credits. With U TURN, you'll be sure to possess a DVD that will outlive the most sophisticated DVD players.

A DVD zone "they don't like it but I do".

Movie Review: A great comedy
Summary: 5 Stars

Now I may just be a sick, twisted human being, but I found this movie utterly hilarious. Although the look and direction are similar to Natural born killers, I don't think I have ever seen anything like this. It takes elements from Red Rock West and fuses them with Natural Born Killers. It is unlike anything you will ever see. For the people who found it hard to sit through, you need to know that Mr. Stone never intended for this to be taken seriously. It is his version of a black comedy and he succeeds. The BEST part of this film has to be the characters. I mean, who, out there did not find TNT (Toby N. Tucker) hilarious? What about my main man Mr. William Robert Thornton as Darrel? There is also a painfully funny performance by Nick Nolte. The man is just too good. It was also cool too see Bo Hopkins pop up for a brief cameo. I really enjoyed seeing Powers Boothe and Nick Nolte together in a movie for the first time since Walter Hill's Extreme Predjudice. I loved the camera work and adored the photography. It has to be said that this is one of Sean Penn's best performances and it is pure pleasure to see his smart-ass, low-life character get just what he deserves. Check it out, it's one hell of a good time.
