Movie Reviews of True Romance [Blu-ray]Movie Review: Absolute magic, a view into Quentin Tarantino's true genius Summary: 5 Stars
**This review contains elements of the film that would be considered spoilers to those who havn't seen it!**
I remember seeing this film in a small theater in Los Angeles when I was about 10 years old. Admittedly, a lot of the material was inappropriate for me at this age, and I was not able to truly appreciate all of the wonderful elements of this film. However, even at that young age, I was still able to appreciate the smart dialog, character development, and gratuitous violence. As I got older, matured, and became a student of film and fan of Quentin Tarantino, I re-watched this film multiple times. I bought the special edition DVD and ultimately the Blu-ray version when it was released. Not only have I grown to love the more subtle elements of the script, characters, and cinematography.
The performances by Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette easily carry the film, and although I am not a sucker for love stories, I could not help but root for characters of Clarence and Alabama. Subsequent appearances by Gary Oldman, Christopher Walken, Dennis Hopper, while small, are breathtaking pieces of filmmaking. There are many other cameo-like appearances (like Brad Pitt) that enhance the movie without seeming cheap. Quentin Tarantino has carved out a unique niche over the course of his career, and his ability to develop characters and utilize dialog to grab the viewer by the seat of his pants and not let go is displayed with perfection in this film. Even hardcore movie critics and enthusiasts need to watch this film a couple times to pick up on all the great little nuances throughout.
Tony Scott, famous for Crimson Tide, Top Gun, Domino, and Man on Fire, does an excellent job of capturing the characters and distilling breathtaking performances out of the actors. In traditional Tarantino fashion, the movie contains an epic Mexican Standoff toward the end. This movie is not at all predictable, and I still pop it in every once in a while to watch it. The extras contained on the Blu-ray are essentially the same as those on the special edition DVD and include commentaries by cast and crew that are definitely worth listening to once you have seen the movie. The alternate ending is also spectacular and is more true-to-fashion for Tarantino.
In conclusion, this movie is absolutely great. Fans of Quentin Taranino must see this film. Watch it for a first, second, and third time, and then watch it with commentary. It is really difficult to go into too much detail about the actual content of the film, because there is something to be said for seeing it for the first time. I dont write many reviews, and give almost no 5 star endorsements, but I feel that it is necessary for True Romance, as it is definitely one of the top 10 movies I have ever seen, and I consider myself a tough crowd and well-rounded film critic.
