Movie Reviews of Troy (Two-Disc Widescreen Edition)Movie Review: a lovely adaptation. . visual treat! Summary: 4 StarsI just saw a preview show of Troy and : What an amazing movie! This is an adaptation of the story of the Fall of Troy from classic Greek literature and done in the tradition of the old epic movies. Huge sets, perfect costumes, legions of extras and, of course, some artistic license. Brad Pitt is PERFECT as Achilles. He looks the part, acts the part and it helps that it is poetry in motion to watch him in action. I didn't want to blink in case I missed something in the final battle with Hector. The movie itself lacked one very important thing : The Gods. Yes, I've read the director's comment about not wanting some actor standing on a hill throwing computer generated thunderbolts at people but, really, without the Gods and their interfering, many of the events don't come accross the way they were meant to in the original poems. Achilles' rage at the death of Patroculus seems a little schizo since the two things he does is attack his fellow soldier and the woman, it is implied, that he loves! Where's the scene where he deals with the gods? Where's the explanation of Priam's religious fervor in following the signs that tell him what the gods want? It comes across as superstitious foolishness. So, if you've read the classics you might squirm a little at certain parts of the movie and want to howl "That's not how it was!" Also, I would not have picked Bana for Hector. Good actor yes but he was supposedly the best warrior of the Trojans and gave Achilles a fight to remember. But, pound for pound, he looks practically delicate against Pitt's brawn! Ah well. Lovely movie, real eye candy. Pitt proved himself as an excellent actor. The battle sequences were lavish and bloody as Homer described them. A hint of Saving Private Ryan on the beach landing scene. A hint of LOTR or The Mummy in some of the aerial shots. But all well done
