Movie Reviews of Troy (Director's Cut) [HD DVD]Movie Review: Realistic adaptation of a classic epic.... Summary: 5 StarsIt's true, Troy varies greatly from Homer's The Illiad. But, as anyone whose ever studied it can tell you, The Illiad was not much more than a massive work of Greek propaganda. Troy makes the Trojan War seem like any real war is. Realistic, first of all. The Greek gods all played active roles in the war, killing and saving people that they favored, almost at will. But also, something rarely shown in movies; both sides are sympathetic. Throughout the movie, different characters on both sides of the war envoke different feelings, and characters such as Achilles and Patroclus are deserving of just as much sympathy as Hector and Priam. The cast performed most of these jobs exceptionally. Peter O'Toole has a wisdom on screen very similar to Richard Harris' performances in the Harry Potter movies. Brad Pitt and Eric Bana did a great job of bringing true internal conflict to characters that, in the books, did tend to lack depth when battle was near. Many people complain that Orlando Bloom gave a poor performance as Paris, but few seem to remember that in the Illiad, Paris had practically no redeemable qualities whatsoever. It seems that in Troy, although he never truly steps up and fights with a sword (obviously excluding his fight with Menelaus)-which is very true to the book-Paris is constantly torn, because he has never been a warrior, and doesn't know how to be one. Not many people seem to notice that situation. The debate of a man being a lover or fighter has been around as long as the two ideas have. But in The Illiad, love is a slight consideration next to honor and glory. The aristocratic warrior ethos is the ultimate possession of any man in the days of The Illiad, so when a man like Paris exists with such conflict, he is simply looked at as whining and weak. Altogether, I would say that the movie is a fantastic adaptation of the original epic, and anyone who can accept that the movie will be quite different from the book should definitely see it.
