Movie Reviews of Tristan and Isolde (Widescreen Edition)Movie Review: Nothing Much to Write Home About. Summary: 2 StarsI'm giving this movie 2 stars because I can't give it a D. It took me over 24 hours after seeing this movie to finally write a review of it. Honestly? You won't be bored if you like lots of gorey war scenes from the dark ages and tons of chopped off heads. I was attracted enough by the commercials to go see it, but I must say that, fan of darker stuff that I am, this movie is downright depressing. I like dark stuff, but this movie isn't even fun dark like Interview with the Vampire, and it doesn't have the sharp edge of a thriller like From Hell. In fact, it's so murky you feel as if you're trapped under water by a thick tangle of seaweed and you need to break free so that you can come up above the surface for sunlight and air.
The only reason to see this movie if you are estrogen charged, or otherwise persuaded, is James Franco as Tristan of Aragon. He has the strutting, pouty, curly-haired testosterone appeal of a dark ages Jim Morrison in a sly, sensitive, and poetic performance. Sophia Myles is, from appearances, the latest Kate Winslet wannabe, but she has neither the charisma nor the presence to be anything but a whining and annoying leading lady who can't decide from one scene to the next if she should don an Irish accent or not.
Come to think of it, was there even a phonetics coach on board for this flick? There were loads of vernacular inconsistencies, and the gore in this movie was so plentiful that only a violence hound could ever give this 5 stars. The story itself had more holes in it than a gutted rival and some really bad acting by the traitor that got beheaded. Yeah, which of several am I referring to? There was good scenery and, in the hands of a better director, I think this movie could have been another Titanic. Well, it's not, and I hate Titanic anyway.
